Explanation of the Verse:
This verse serves as a profound reminder of Allah's boundless grace and mercy upon the believers who were involved in the incident of slander against the Mother of the Believers, Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her). Had it not been for Allah's favor upon you in this worldly life—by not hastening His punishment upon you and giving you the opportunity to repent—and His mercy in the Hereafter—by forgiving those who sincerely turned back to Him—a tremendous punishment would have certainly afflicted you for the false accusations and wicked talk you spread.
Allah, in His infinite kindness, did not seize you immediately for this grave sin. Instead, He opened the door of repentance, allowing those who erred to purify themselves and return to Him. This is a manifestation of His gentle dealing with His servants, as He says elsewhere: "Say, 'O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful'" (Az-Zumar 39:53).
The "tremendous punishment" mentioned here refers to the severe torment that would have been due in the Hereafter for such a heinous act of slander—a sin that strikes at the honor of the Prophet's household and undermines the moral fabric of the community. Yet, Allah's grace intervened, and His mercy prevailed, turning what could have been a cause of destruction into a lesson of forgiveness and purification.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear believer, look at how your Lord deals with you! Even when you slip into sin—especially sins of the tongue that spread corruption and hurt others—Allah does not abandon you. He gives you time, He grants you the chance to repent, and He loves to forgive. This is the beauty of Islam: the door of repentance is always open, and Allah's mercy surpasses His wrath.
Let this verse inspire you to never despair of Allah's mercy, no matter how great your sin may seem. At the same time, let it be a warning to guard your tongue, for words can be heavier than mountains. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "A servant may speak a word that pleases Allah, and because of it, Allah raises him in degrees; and a servant may speak a word that angers Allah, and because of it, he falls into Hellfire" (Al-Bukhari).
So, hasten to repent for any wrong you have committed, and thank Allah for His grace that shields you from the consequences of your mistakes. Indeed, His mercy is vast, and His love for those who turn back to Him is even vaster.
