📖 English Meaning
Or [they are] like darknesses within an unfathomable sea which is covered by waves, upon which are waves, over which are clouds - darknesses, some of them upon others. When one puts out his hand [therein], he can hardly see it. And he to whom Allah has not granted light - for him there is no light.

Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • "Lujjiyy" (لُجِّيّ): Deep, vast sea; the deep part of the ocean where the water is immense and unfathomable.
  • "Yaghshahu" (يَغْشَاهُ): Covers or overwhelms it.
  • "Lam yakad" (لَمْ يَكَدْ): He could hardly, or he was not even close to seeing it.
  • "Nur" (نُور): Light, guidance, and illumination—both physical and spiritual.

Explanation of the Verse:

Allah, the Most Merciful, presents another powerful parable to describe the state of those who reject faith and persist in disbelief. He compares their deeds and their spiritual condition to layers of darkness upon darkness in a deep, fathomless sea. Imagine a vast ocean, so deep that its bottom is lost in utter blackness. Above this sea, a massive wave surges and covers it. Then, from above that wave, another wave rises and crashes over it. And above all of this, a thick, heavy cloud blankets the sky, blocking even the faintest glimmer of light. The result is absolute, compounded darkness—one layer piled upon another, each one intensifying the gloom. If a person caught in this darkness extends his hand, he can barely see it, let alone find his way. The darkness is so overwhelming that even his own hand, so close to his eyes, is nearly invisible to him.

This is the exact condition of the disbeliever’s heart and soul. Layer upon layer of spiritual darkness accumulates over him: the darkness of ignorance, the darkness of doubt and confusion, the darkness of a sealed heart, and the darkness of misguided deeds. Each sin and each act of rejection adds another veil, until he is completely lost, unable to perceive the truth or find any path out of his despair.

Then comes the profound conclusion of the verse: "And whoever Allah does not grant light—for him there is no light." This is a declaration of absolute dependence on Allah. True guidance, true clarity, and true enlightenment come only from Him. If Allah does not bestow His light—through His Book, His guidance, and His mercy—then no one can provide it. No philosophy, no intellect, no worldly knowledge can substitute for the divine light that illuminates the heart and leads a soul to salvation.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Beloved reader, this verse is a profound invitation to recognize your utter need for Allah’s guidance. Do not let the layers of this world’s distractions, desires, and doubts accumulate over your heart like those waves of darkness. Seek the light of Allah while it is within your reach—through the Qur'an, through sincere repentance, and through turning to Him with a humble heart. For the One who created the light of the sun and the moon is the same One who can illuminate your soul with faith and certainty. Do not wait until the darkness becomes overwhelming. Turn to Him now, and He will grant you a light that will guide you through every trial in this life and lead you to the eternal bliss of Paradise in the Hereafter. For indeed, whoever Allah guides, no one can lead astray, and whoever He leaves without light, no source of light in the entire universe can ever benefit him.

📜 Verse 38-42 — An-Nur

That Allah may reward them [according to] the best of what they did and increase them from His bounty. And Allah gives provision to whom He wills without account.
But those who disbelieved - their deeds are like a mirage in a lowland which a thirsty one thinks is water until, when he comes to it, he finds it is nothing but finds Allah before Him, and He will pay him in full his due; and Allah is swift in account.
Or [they are] like darknesses within an unfathomable sea which is covered by waves, upon which are waves, over which are clouds - darknesses, some of them upon others. When one puts out his hand [therein], he can hardly see it. And he to whom Allah has not granted light - for him there is no light.
Do you not see that Allah is exalted by whomever is within the heavens and the earth and [by] the birds with wings spread [in flight]? Each [of them] has known his [means of] prayer and exalting [Him], and Allah is Knowing of what they do.
And to Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and to Allah is the destination.
