Word Meanings:
- Jumlatan wahidah: All at once, as a single complete revelation.
- Linuthabbita bihi fu’adaka: To strengthen and fortify your heart with it.
- Rattalnahu tartilan: We revealed it gradually, in measured and distinct stages, clearly explained.
Explanation of the Verse:
The disbelievers of Makkah raised an objection, saying: "Why was the Qur'an not sent down upon Muhammad all at once, as a single book, just as the Torah, the Gospel, and the Psalms were revealed in complete form?" They thought this was a flaw in the revelation, not realizing the profound wisdom behind its gradual descent.
Allah, the Most High, responded to their criticism with a divine answer that turns their objection into a sign of His mercy and wisdom. He said: "Thus We have sent it down" — meaning, We sent it in this gradual manner deliberately, not out of incapacity, but out of perfect design. The purpose was: "to strengthen your heart with it." Every time a new portion of the Qur'an was revealed, the Prophet ﷺ would face new challenges, and with each revelation came fresh certainty, renewed patience, and increased steadfastness. The Qur'an was not merely a book to be read; it was a living source of support, accompanying the Prophet ﷺ through every trial, answering every question, and calming every anxiety.
Furthermore, Allah said: "And We have recited it to you in slow, measured stages" — meaning, We revealed it piece by piece, in a clear and orderly manner, so that it could be easily memorized, deeply understood, and practically applied. Had it been sent down all at once, its teachings would have been overwhelming for the early Muslim community. Instead, it came gradually, building faith step by step, purifying souls over time, and establishing laws as they were needed.
A Call to Reflection and Love for the Qur'an:
Dear reader, see how the Qur'an was revealed with such care and precision — not as a random event, but as a divine curriculum for humanity. Every verse, every chapter, every pause in revelation was a lesson in patience, wisdom, and mercy. The gradual revelation of the Qur'an is not a weakness; it is a testament to Allah's profound knowledge of His servants' needs. It was a means of nurturing the Prophet ﷺ and his companions, and through them, all of humanity until the end of time.
So when you open the Qur'an today, remember that you are holding a book that was sent down with love, with purpose, and with a plan. Let its verses settle in your heart the way they were revealed — gradually, thoughtfully, and with deep reflection. The more you engage with it, the more your heart will be strengthened, just as the Prophet's ﷺ heart was strengthened through it. And know that this Qur'an is not just a book to be recited; it is a companion for your journey, a light for your path, and a source of peace for your soul. Embrace it, and let it transform you, just as it transformed the first generation of believers into the best of nations.
