And they have already come upon the town which was showered with a rain of evil. So have they not seen it? But they are not expecting resurrection.

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Al-Qaryah (the town): refers to the town of Sodom (Sadum), the principal settlement of the people of Prophet Lot (peace be upon him).
  • Umṭirat (was rained upon): was showered with a rain of stones — a punishment sent down from the sky.
  • Maṭar al-Saw’ (the evil rain): the rain of calamity and destruction, namely the pelting of stones upon the wicked people of Lot.
  • Lā Yarjūna nushūran: they did not hope for or expect any resurrection (i.e., they denied the Hereafter and thus had no fear of accountability).

Explanation of the Verse:

Allah (Exalted be He) draws attention to a profound lesson embedded in the very paths the disbelievers of Quraysh used to tread. In their frequent trade journeys to the Levant (al-Shām), they would inevitably pass by the ruins of the town of Sodom — the very place that was destroyed by a horrific rain of baked clay stones, hurled down as divine punishment for the abominable sins of its inhabitants. That town was not a distant, unknown legend; it lay right on their route, visible and tangible. They saw its desolate remains with their own eyes, yet they failed to take heed or reflect on the fate that befell its people.

The verse challenges them: "Did they not see it?" The answer is that they did see it, but their hearts were sealed. The real reason for their heedlessness was not ignorance — it was their denial of the Resurrection. They did not believe in a Day of Reckoning, so they saw the ruins as mere scenery, not as a warning. Had they truly believed in the Hereafter, they would have understood that the destruction of Sodom was a preview of divine justice — a justice that awaits all who persist in sin and reject the truth.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, pause with me at this scene. The Quraysh passed by the ruins of Sodom time and again, yet they never asked: "What happened here? Why did this mighty town become a heap of rubble?" They saw the evidence of Allah’s power and justice, but their hearts were blind because they had no hope in the meeting with their Lord.

This verse is a timeless reminder for us today. How many signs do we pass by every day — in the remnants of past nations, in the order of the universe, in the verses of the Qur’an — yet we remain unmoved? The cure for such heedlessness is to revive our faith in the Hereafter. When we truly believe that we will stand before Allah and be held accountable for every deed, then every sign around us becomes a lesson, and every moment becomes an opportunity to draw closer to Him.

Let us not be like those who saw but did not see, who heard but did not listen. Let us open our hearts to the truth, embrace the message of Islam, and live with the hope of Allah’s mercy and the fear of His justice. For the One who destroyed the wicked people of Lot is the same One who promises Paradise to the believers — and His promise is true.

📜 Verse 38-42 — Al-Furqan

And [We destroyed] 'Aad and Thamud and the companions of the well and many generations between them.
And for each We presented examples [as warnings], and each We destroyed with [total] destruction.
And they have already come upon the town which was showered with a rain of evil. So have they not seen it? But they are not expecting resurrection.
And when they see you, [O Muhammad], they take you not except in ridicule, [saying], "Is this the one whom Allah has sent as a messenger?
He almost would have misled us from our gods had we not been steadfast in [worship of] them." But they are going to know, when they see the punishment, who is farthest astray in [his] way.
