  • "Kullan" (كُلًّا): Every one of them – referring to the destroyed nations mentioned earlier in the Surah.
  • "Darabnā" (ضَرَبْنَا): We struck/set forth – meaning We presented and made clear.
  • "Amthāl" (الْأَمْثَالَ): Parables, examples, and proofs – the lessons and evidences drawn from the fates of previous peoples.
  • "Tabbernā" (تَبَّرْنَا): We destroyed utterly – from *tabbara*, meaning to break, shatter, or annihilate completely.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this profound verse, Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) declares His perfect justice and mercy even in punishment. He tells us that for every one of the destroyed nations – whether it was the people of Noah, ‘Ād, Thamūd, or others – He first presented clear examples and striking proofs. He sent messengers, revealed scriptures, and showed them the consequences of those who came before them who rejected the truth. No nation was destroyed without first receiving a warning and a chance to reflect. The parables and lessons were laid out before them like a roadmap, showing both the path of guidance and the fate of those who strayed from it.

Yet, despite these clear signs and admonitions, they persisted in their arrogance and disbelief. So Allah, in His perfect wisdom, destroyed them with a devastating and complete annihilation – *tatbīran* – a word that paints a vivid picture of something being shattered into pieces, like glass or metal broken beyond repair. Their power, their wealth, their civilizations – all were crushed to nothing.

This verse carries a powerful lesson for us today. It reminds us that Allah never punishes without first giving ample warning and opportunity for repentance. He is Al-‘Adl (The Just) and Ar-Rahmān (The Most Merciful) – His mercy precedes His wrath, and His justice is always tempered with patience. The examples of past nations are not mere stories; they are living lessons for us to ponder. If we see the signs around us – the rise and fall of powers, the consequences of injustice, the fleeting nature of worldly success – we should take heed before it is too late.

Dear reader, this verse is an invitation to open your heart. Allah has not left you without guidance; He has placed countless examples in the Quran and in the world around you. Every sunrise and sunset, every blessing you enjoy, every trial you face – all are signs pointing to your Creator. Do not be like those who saw the truth but turned away. Instead, be among those who reflect, who repent, and who strive to live in obedience to Allah. The door of mercy is open, but it will not remain open forever. Seize this moment, for Allah loves those who return to Him, and His forgiveness is greater than any sin you may have committed.

And the people of Noah - when they denied the messengers, We drowned them, and We made them for mankind a sign. And We have prepared for the wrongdoers a painful punishment.
38وَعَادًا وَثَمُودَ وَأَصْحَابَ الرَّسِّ وَقُرُونًا بَيْنَ ذَٰلِكَ كَثِيرًا
And [We destroyed] 'Aad and Thamud and the companions of the well and many generations between them.
39وَكُلًّا ضَرَبْنَا لَهُ الْأَمْثَالَ ۖ وَكُلًّا تَبَّرْنَا تَتْبِيرًا
And for each We presented examples [as warnings], and each We destroyed with [total] destruction.
And they have already come upon the town which was showered with a rain of evil. So have they not seen it? But they are not expecting resurrection.
41وَإِذَا رَأَوْكَ إِن يَتَّخِذُونَكَ إِلَّا هُزُوًا أَهَٰذَا الَّذِي بَعَثَ اللَّهُ رَسُولًا
And when they see you, [O Muhammad], they take you not except in ridicule, [saying], "Is this the one whom Allah has sent as a messenger?
