Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- يَعْبَأُ (ya'ba'u): To care, to pay attention to, or to attach significance to something.
- دُعَاؤُكُمْ (du'a'ukum): Your supplication — encompassing both the call of worship (prayer, devotion) and the call of asking (seeking help and needs from Allah).
- لِزَامًا (lizaman): That which clings and sticks firmly; an inevitable, inescapable consequence.
Explanation of the Verse:
O Messenger, say to those who persist in their disbelief and arrogance: My Lord does not care about you at all, nor does He attach any value to your existence, were it not for your calling upon Him — whether through sincere worship or through asking Him for your needs. Your very existence gains meaning and honor only through this connection with your Creator. But since you have denied the truth — you have rejected the Messenger and the revelation he brought from your Lord — and you have turned away from worship and submission, then your denial will inevitably become a punishment that clings to you like a debtor's obligation that he cannot escape. It will seize you in this world and in the Hereafter, surrounding you from every direction with no way out.
A Call to Reflection:
This verse carries a profound and humbling message for every soul. It tells us that our value in the sight of Allah is not measured by wealth, status, lineage, or power — but by our connection to Him through supplication and worship. The moment we sever that bond, we lose our significance in the grand scheme of existence. What an honor it is, then, that the Lord of the heavens and the earth invites us to call upon Him! He says elsewhere: "Call upon Me; I will respond to you" (Ghafir: 60). So do not deprive yourselves of this immense honor. Turn to your Lord in humility, raise your hands in supplication, and let your hearts be filled with the sweetness of knowing that the Most Merciful listens to you, cares for you, and values your call. For the one who calls upon Allah is never abandoned, and the one who turns away has only himself to blame for the consequences. Let this verse be a wake-up call — before the inevitable becomes your reality, and before the punishment that clings becomes your portion. The door of repentance is open, and the Lord who values your supplication is waiting for you to return.
