Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Āyah (آيَةً): A sign, lesson, or profound evidence that leads the heart to reflect and draw wisdom.
- Aktharuhum (أَكْثَرُهُم): The majority of them—referring to the people of Prophet Ibrāhīm (Abraham), peace be upon him, who witnessed his call and the miracles of Allah's power.
Tafsir (Explanation):
In this verse, Allah concludes the remarkable story of His Prophet Ibrāhīm, peace be upon him, with a powerful reminder: "Indeed, in that is a sign, but most of them were not believers." The "sign" here refers to the entire narrative just mentioned—how Ibrāhīm, with unwavering faith and profound reasoning, confronted his people's idol worship, challenged their false beliefs, and ultimately witnessed Allah's protection and victory over the tyrant Nimrod. The fire that was lit to burn him became cool and safe by Allah's command, a miracle that defied all natural laws. This is a clear lesson for anyone who reflects: that Allah alone is the All-Powerful, the One who controls all affairs, and that His messengers are always supported, while the disbelievers ultimately face humiliation and loss.
Yet, despite this extraordinary sign, the majority of Ibrāhīm's people did not believe. Their hearts were sealed by arrogance and blind following of their ancestors. This is a recurring theme in the Qur'an—that truth, no matter how clear, is often rejected by those who prefer the comfort of falsehood. The verse gently but firmly points out that faith is a gift from Allah, granted to those who sincerely seek it, and that the lack of belief in the majority should not discourage the believer from conveying the message. The Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, was comforted by this pattern: he was not alone in facing rejection, for even the greatest prophets before him were disbelieved by their own people.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear reader, pause and reflect on this verse. The story of Ibrāhīm is not just history—it is a living lesson for you and me. It teaches us that truth does not need the approval of the majority. The path to Allah may seem lonely at times, but it is the path of the prophets and the righteous. When you feel that people around you are indifferent to the message of Islam, remember that even Ibrāhīm, the "friend of Allah," was rejected by most of his people. Yet he remained steadfast, and Allah made his name eternal and his legacy a beacon for all of humanity. So hold firm to your faith, be patient in your call to goodness, and trust that Allah sees your efforts. The sign is there for those who open their hearts—will you be among those who truly believe and act upon it? Allah, the Almighty, the Most Merciful, is always near, ready to guide those who turn to Him with sincerity.
