Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-ʿAzīz (العزيز): The Almighty, the All-Powerful, the One who prevails over all things and is never defeated or overcome.
- Ar-Raḥīm (الرحيم): The Most Merciful, the One who bestows His mercy upon His creation, especially upon the believers.
Tafsir (Explanation):
In this verse, Allah addresses His Prophet Muhammad ﷺ with a profound reassurance and a powerful reminder of His two magnificent attributes: Al-ʿAzīz and Ar-Raḥīm.
Al-ʿAzīz — Allah is the Almighty who possesses absolute power and might. He is never subdued, never weakened, and never fails to fulfill His promise. For those who reject His messengers and persist in disbelief, He is fully capable of exacting just retribution at the moment He wills. No force in the heavens or on earth can stand against His decree. This attribute brings comfort to the believers who face opposition, knowing that their Lord is fully in control and will not leave injustice unaddressed.
Ar-Raḥīm — At the same time, Allah is the Most Merciful. His mercy is vast and encompasses all things. He is merciful to His believing servants by guiding them, forgiving their sins, and rewarding them with His grace. Even when He delays punishment for the disbelievers, this delay is itself a manifestation of His mercy — giving them time to repent, return to Him, and be saved from His punishment. As one scholar beautifully expressed it: He is Al-ʿAzīz in His power to seize, and Ar-Raḥīm in His granting of respite.
This verse appears as a recurring refrain throughout the story of Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) and his people, serving as a powerful lesson: the same Lord who is mighty enough to destroy the arrogant is also merciful enough to accept the penitent. The door of repentance is always open — no matter how far one has strayed, the mercy of Allah is nearer than one might think.
A Daʿwah Reflection:
Dear reader, let this verse touch your heart. Your Lord is Al-ʿAzīz — nothing in your life happens outside His knowledge and power. When you feel weak, remember His strength. When you feel overwhelmed by trials, remember that the Almighty is your protector. And when you sin and feel unworthy, remember that He is Ar-Raḥīm — His mercy embraces those who turn back to Him, no matter their past. The very combination of these two names is an invitation: come to the One who is mighty enough to change your circumstances and merciful enough to forgive your shortcomings. Do not despair, and do not delay — His mercy is calling you today.
