Word Meanings:
- "Musrifin" (المُسْرِفِينَ): Those who transgress beyond all bounds, the extravagant ones who exceed the limits in sin, disobedience, and corruption. In this context, it refers to those who are excessive in their wrongdoing, whether through polytheism, oppression, or persistent sinfulness.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse is part of the counsel given by the Prophet Salih (peace be upon him) to his people, the Thamud. He warns them to fear Allah's punishment and to accept his sincere advice, rather than following the commands of those who have transgressed against their own souls by persisting in disobedience to Allah.
The "Musrifin" mentioned here are those who have crossed every boundary in their rebellion against Allah. They are the ones who have made corruption and mischief their constant habit — spreading evil in the land without any intention of reform. Their commands lead only to destruction, both in this world and the Hereafter.
The prohibition is clear and direct: do not obey such people, no matter their status, wealth, or influence. Their path is one of ruin, and following them means abandoning the straight path of Allah. The verse serves as a timeless principle for all believers — that obedience to creation is never permissible if it leads to disobedience of the Creator.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This divine instruction carries a profound lesson for every Muslim. Allah, in His infinite mercy, warns us against those who would lead us astray — whether they are individuals of influence, societal pressures, or prevailing trends that contradict His commands. The believer who truly loves Allah and desires His pleasure must exercise discernment: whose command am I following? Is it the command of the Most Merciful, or the command of those who have wasted their souls in excess and transgression?
How beautiful is this guidance — it protects us from the destructive paths that others have paved with their own arrogance and sin. By heeding this warning, we safeguard our faith, our character, and our ultimate success. The Qur'an consistently calls us to the path of balance, righteousness, and accountability. Let us be among those who listen to divine counsel, who choose the company of the righteous, and who refuse to surrender our will to those whose end is loss. Indeed, in obeying Allah and His Messenger lies true honor, peace, and eternal success.
