Word Meanings:

  • يُفْسِدُونَ (yufsidūn): Those who cause corruption, spread mischief, and engage in acts of disobedience and transgression.
  • فِي الْأَرْضِ (fi al-ard): Upon the earth, meaning throughout the land and among the people.
  • وَلَا يُصْلِحُونَ (wa lā yuṣliḥūn): And they do not set things right, nor do they bring about reform or goodness.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse describes a specific group of people—those who are deeply entrenched in corruption and mischief upon the earth. They are characterized by their persistent engagement in acts of disobedience to Allah, spreading chaos, injustice, and sin wherever they go. Their corruption is not occasional or accidental; it is their very nature and habit. They do not merely fail to do good—they actively work against it. They neither reform themselves by turning to Allah in obedience, nor do they strive to improve the condition of others or the society around them. Their lives are marked by a complete absence of constructive, righteous action.

These are the people whom the righteous warn against following, for their path leads only to ruin in this world and the Hereafter. They are the ones who reject divine guidance, oppress others, and prioritize their own desires over the commands of Allah. Their corruption is comprehensive—it affects their own souls, their families, their communities, and the earth itself. And crucially, they make no effort to repair what they have broken, nor do they seek forgiveness or return to the path of righteousness.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, this verse is a powerful reminder for every one of us to examine our own lives. Are we among those who bring about reform and goodness, or are we, knowingly or unknowingly, contributing to corruption? Islam calls us to be people of *islah* (reform)—those who mend what is broken, who spread justice, kindness, and truth, and who strive to leave the earth better than we found it. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "The best of people are those who are most beneficial to others."

Let this verse inspire you to be a source of positive change in your family, your community, and the world at large. Turn to Allah in sincere repentance, obey His commands, and be among those who not only avoid corruption but actively work to establish goodness. For Allah loves those who do good, and He has promised them a great reward. Do not follow the path of the corrupters, for their end is destruction—but the end of the reformers is success and eternal bliss. Choose today to be a reformer, and let your life be a testimony to the beauty of Islam.
