Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Fattaqullāh (فَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ): Fear Allah, be conscious of Him, and protect yourselves from His punishment by fulfilling His commands and avoiding His prohibitions.
  • Wa Aṭīʿūn (وَأَطِيعُونِ): And obey me — meaning follow the Prophet Ṣāliḥ (peace be upon him) in what he calls them to: the worship of Allah alone, justice, and abandoning corruption.

Tafsir (Explanation):

In this verse, the Prophet Ṣāliḥ (peace be upon him) delivers a profound and heartfelt call to his people — the Thamūd — urging them to turn back to their Lord. He says: *"So fear Allah and obey me."* This is not merely a command; it is an invitation to salvation, rooted in mercy and concern for their well-being.

The meaning of *fearing Allah* here is to be mindful of Him in every action — to carry out what He has commanded, such as worshipping Him alone without partners, and to abstain from what He has forbidden, such as injustice, arrogance, and spreading corruption on earth. It is a call to accountability, reminding them that they will stand before their Creator and answer for their deeds.

Then he says: *"and obey me"* — meaning, accept my message and follow my guidance, for my obedience is inseparable from obedience to Allah. The Prophet Ṣāliḥ was not asking for personal loyalty or worldly gain; he was a messenger of truth, calling them to what would bring them honor in this life and success in the Hereafter. His obedience meant abandoning the path of the transgressors — those who were bent on corruption and who rejected the signs of Allah.

This verse carries a timeless lesson for every believer: true success lies in taqwā (God-consciousness) and in following the guidance of Allah’s messengers. When a person combines fear of Allah with obedience to His prophets, they align their heart, speech, and actions with the divine will — and that is the path to peace, both inwardly and outwardly.

A Daʿwah Reflection:

Dear reader, reflect on the beauty of this call. The Prophet Ṣāliḥ did not use force or compulsion; he used sincere advice and gentle persuasion. He reminded his people of their Creator and their own good. This is the essence of Islamic daʿwah — to invite others to what is best with wisdom and compassion. And for us today, the message is just as relevant: fear Allah in your private and public life, and follow the guidance of His final Messenger, Muhammad (peace be upon him), for in that lies your safety in this world and your eternal bliss in the Hereafter. Allah does not ask of us anything except what is for our own benefit — so embrace this call with an open heart, and you will find a life of purpose, tranquility, and divine love.

📜 Verse 148-152 — Ash-Shu'ara

And fields of crops and palm trees with softened fruit?
And you carve out of the mountains, homes, with skill.
So fear Allah and obey me.
And do not obey the order of the transgressors,
Who cause corruption in the land and do not amend."
