Surah Ash-Shu'ara — Verse 164

Tafsir (Explanation):

Prophet Lut (peace be upon him) addressed his people with a heart full of sincerity and concern for their salvation. He had already called them to fear Allah and to abandon their abominable sins, reminding them that he was a trustworthy messenger sent by their Lord. Now, in this verse, he adds a crucial point that distinguishes true prophets from false claimants: he seeks no worldly compensation for his efforts.

Lut says: *"I do not ask you for any reward for this call to guidance."* He makes it crystal clear that his mission is purely for the sake of Allah — not for wealth, status, or personal gain. He is not selling them a product or offering a service for payment. His only expectation of reward comes from Allah alone, the Lord of all the worlds, who is the ultimate source of all provision and recompense.

This statement carries profound wisdom. It reassures the listener that the caller to truth has no hidden agenda, no material motive, and no desire to exploit the people. His sole aim is their welfare — both in this life and the Hereafter. By placing his reward solely with Allah, Lut demonstrates complete trust in his Creator and absolute sincerity in his mission.

This verse teaches us a timeless principle for anyone who invites others to goodness: sincerity (ikhlas) is the soul of da'wah. When a person calls others to Islam — whether through teaching, preaching, or personal example — they must purify their intention. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) followed the same approach, and so did all the messengers before him. They never sought payment, praise, or position from the people. Their reward was with Allah, and Allah never fails to reward those who do good.

For the one who hears this message, it is a sign of truth. A false prophet or a charlatan seeks worldly gains — money, fame, or power. But a true caller to Allah seeks only His pleasure. When you see someone who sacrifices their time, wealth, and comfort for the sake of guiding others, with no expectation of worldly return, know that this is a sign of divine sincerity.

And for the one who calls to Allah, let this verse be a reminder: do not let your heart become attached to people's appreciation or compensation. Seek your reward from the One who owns everything. If people accept your call, thank Allah. If they reject you, know that your reward is secure with your Lord. The Prophet Lut faced a people who not only rejected him but also threatened him — yet he remained firm, because his hope was not in them, but in Allah.

This is the beauty of Islam: it frees the believer from the bondage of people's opinions and expectations. When your reward is with Allah, you are truly free. So let us strive to purify our intentions in every act of worship, every word of advice, and every effort to spread goodness. For indeed, Allah is the best of providers, and His reward is the greatest of all rewards.
