Word Meanings:

  • Rabbu (رَبُّ): The Lord, Master, Owner, and Sustainer who creates, governs, and manages all affairs.
  • Al-Samawati (السَّمَاوَاتِ): The heavens — the celestial realms and all that they contain.
  • Al-Ard (الأَرْضِ): The earth — the entire terrestrial world.
  • Ma Baynahuma (مَا بَيْنَهُمَا): Whatever lies between the heavens and the earth — all created beings, elements, and realms.
  • Muqinin (مُّوقِنِينَ): Those who are certain, convinced with firm faith and unwavering certainty, free from doubt.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this noble verse, Prophet Moses (peace be upon him) responds to Pharaoh's question — when Pharaoh asked, "And what is the Lord of the worlds?" — with a clear, profound, and concise answer. Moses said: "He is the Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them, if you were certain."

This means: The One Who created, owns, and manages the heavens above, the earth beneath, and everything in between — from the angels, stars, planets, winds, and all unseen realms, to the mountains, oceans, animals, plants, and every living creature — He alone is the Lord of all worlds. He is the One Who originated them, sustains them, and governs their affairs with perfect wisdom and justice.

Moses addressed Pharaoh with the phrase "if you were certain" as a powerful intellectual challenge. He was essentially saying: If you truly possess certainty and conviction in your heart — if you are honest with yourselves — you would inevitably acknowledge that this vast universe with its perfect order cannot be the work of a mere human like yourself, nor the product of false gods, but must be the creation of One Almighty God alone. This statement invites Pharaoh and his people to use their reason and innate nature (fitrah) to arrive at the truth.

A Da'wah Reflection for the Reader:

This verse carries a timeless message for every human being. Look around you — at the sky above with its stars and planets moving in perfect harmony, at the earth beneath you with its mountains, rivers, and abundant provisions, and at everything in between — and ask yourself: Who created all of this? Who maintains this intricate balance? The answer is clear for anyone who is truly certain: it is Allah, the Lord of the heavens and the earth.

The call of Moses to Pharaoh was not merely a historical event — it is a call to you and me today. Allah invites us to reflect on His creation, to strengthen our certainty, and to submit to Him alone. When you recognize that Allah is the Lord of everything, your heart finds peace, your life gains purpose, and your worship becomes sincere. This is the essence of Islam: to know your Lord, to worship Him alone, and to live with certainty that He is watching over you, sustaining you, and guiding you to what is best.

So, dear reader, let this verse inspire you to deepen your certainty in Allah. Reflect on His signs in the universe and in yourself, and let that reflection lead you to love, obedience, and devotion to the One Who created you and cares for you — for indeed, He is the Lord of all that exists.
