Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

I will surely punish him
  • عَذَابًا شَدِيدًا – a severe punishment
I will surely slaughter him
  • بِسُلْطَانٍ مُّبِينٍ – with a clear, evident proof or justification

Tafsir (Explanation):

Prophet Sulayman (peace be upon him) was inspecting the birds that had been subjugated to his service, as part of his miraculous kingdom granted by Allah. Among these birds was a special hoopoe that was known for its distinct qualities and duties. When Sulayman looked around and did not see the hoopoe, he expressed his astonishment, saying: "Why do I not see the hoopoe? Is it absent, or has something hidden it from my sight?"

When it became clear that the hoopoe was indeed absent without permission, Sulayman — being a just and wise king who upheld discipline and order — declared his firm resolve: "I will surely punish him with a severe punishment, or slaughter him, unless he brings me a clear, convincing excuse for his absence."

This statement reflects Sulayman's commitment to justice and accountability. He did not act hastily; rather, he gave the hoopoe an opportunity to present a valid reason. The punishment was meant to discipline and correct, not to oppress. The slaughter was a stern warning for dereliction of duty, while the "clear proof" refers to an evident justification that would excuse his absence and demonstrate that he had not abandoned his post without cause.

This verse teaches us profound lessons:

  • Accountability is essential in every role and responsibility. Sulayman, despite his immense power and prophethood, did not overlook negligence — he addressed it firmly.
  • Fairness and mercy are combined: even in anger, he left the door open for the hoopoe to explain itself. This is the hallmark of true justice — giving the accused a chance to defend themselves.
  • Order and discipline are pillars of a successful society. When everyone fulfills their duties, harmony prevails; when one neglects, the entire system suffers.

As believers, we are reminded that Allah, the All-Knowing, watches over all our actions. Just as Sulayman held a small bird accountable, we too will be held accountable for our deeds — whether great or small. Let this inspire us to be diligent in our obligations, sincere in our repentance, and always ready to present our excuses with honesty and clarity. And let us remember that Allah’s justice is perfect, and His mercy encompasses all — for He is the Best of Judges and the Most Merciful of those who show mercy.

📜 Verse 19-23 — An-Naml

So [Solomon] smiled, amused at her speech, and said, "My Lord, enable me to be grateful for Your favor which You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents and to do righteousness of which You approve. And admit me by Your mercy into [the ranks of] Your righteous servants."
And he took attendance of the birds and said, "Why do I not see the hoopoe - or is he among the absent?
I will surely punish him with a severe punishment or slaughter him unless he brings me clear authorization."
But the hoopoe stayed not long and said, "I have encompassed [in knowledge] that which you have not encompassed, and I have come to you from Sheba with certain news.
Indeed, I found [there] a woman ruling them, and she has been given of all things, and she has a great throne.
