Word Meanings:

  • فَمَكَثَ (fa-makatha): He stayed or remained for a period of time.
  • غَيْرَ بَعِيدٍ (ghayra ba'eed): Not long; a short while.
  • أَحَطتُ (ahat'tu): I have encompassed or gained complete knowledge of something, as if surrounding it from all sides.
(Saba'): The ancient city/kingdom of Sheba, located in Yemen.
  • بِنَبَإٍ يَقِينٍ (binaba-in yaqeen): With certain, definite, and verified news.

Explanation of the Verse:

After Prophet Sulayman (Solomon, peace be upon him) noticed the hoopoe bird's absence from his grand assembly of birds, jinn, and humans, he vowed to punish it severely or slaughter it unless it presented a valid excuse. The hoopoe did not keep him waiting long. It returned after a brief absence and addressed its master with confidence and respect, saying: *"I have gained knowledge of something that you do not possess, and I have come to you from the land of Saba' (Sheba) with news that is certain and true."*

The hoopoe's words reveal several profound lessons. First, it acknowledged Sulayman's immense knowledge and authority, yet it humbly asserted that it had been granted a specific piece of information that even the great prophet-king did not yet know. This teaches us that knowledge is vast and distributed by Allah across His creation—no one, regardless of their rank, possesses all knowledge. Second, the hoopoe emphasized the certainty of its report, showing that a true believer must be honest and precise when conveying information, especially to those in authority. Third, the bird's swift return after a short absence demonstrates the importance of fulfilling one's duties promptly and taking responsibility for one's actions.

This verse also highlights the beauty of Allah's creation: a small bird was made an instrument of divine wisdom, carrying crucial news that would eventually lead an entire nation to the light of monotheism. It reminds us that Allah can use any of His creatures—no matter how small or seemingly insignificant—to accomplish great purposes. As believers, we should never underestimate our own potential to be bearers of truth and goodness, nor should we look down upon others based on their size, status, or appearance.

Furthermore, the hoopoe's words inspire us to seek knowledge diligently and to be courageous in sharing what we learn, even when addressing those who are greater than us in rank. It also teaches us the value of honesty in communication—the hoopoe did not exaggerate or fabricate; it brought verified news, which is a hallmark of a trustworthy character. In a world filled with rumors and misinformation, this Quranic narrative urges us to be people of certainty and integrity, always verifying our words before we speak.

The story continues to unfold with the hoopoe revealing the existence of a powerful queen and her people who worshipped the sun instead of Allah—a revelation that would set the stage for one of the most remarkable dialogues between faith and power in human history. This verse, therefore, serves as a bridge to that greater narrative, reminding us that even the smallest acts of observation and communication can have far-reaching consequences when guided by sincerity and divine will.

📜 Verse 20-24 — An-Naml

And he took attendance of the birds and said, "Why do I not see the hoopoe - or is he among the absent?
I will surely punish him with a severe punishment or slaughter him unless he brings me clear authorization."
But the hoopoe stayed not long and said, "I have encompassed [in knowledge] that which you have not encompassed, and I have come to you from Sheba with certain news.
Indeed, I found [there] a woman ruling them, and she has been given of all things, and she has a great throne.
I found her and her people prostrating to the sun instead of Allah, and Satan has made their deeds pleasing to them and averted them from [His] way, so they are not guided,
