Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Phrases:
- "Yasjuduna lil-shams" – They prostrate to the sun, meaning they worship it in devotion and reverence.
- "Min dunillah" – Besides Allah, i.e., instead of worshipping Allah alone.
- "Zayyana lahum al-shaytan a'malahum" – Satan made their deeds appear fair and attractive to them.
- "Fasadahum 'an al-sabeel" – He turned them away from the path, i.e., the path of truth and guidance.
- "Fahum la yahtadoon" – So they are not guided, meaning they cannot find their way to the truth.
Tafsir (Explanation):
The hoopoe bird, upon returning from its reconnaissance mission, reported to Prophet Sulayman (peace be upon him) about the land of Sheba and its queen, Bilqis. It said: "I found her and her people prostrating to the sun instead of Allah." This was a profound observation, for it revealed that despite their immense wealth, power, and civilization, they had fallen into the grave error of worshipping a created object—the sun—rather than the Creator of the sun and everything else.
The verse then explains the root cause of their misguidance: Satan had beautified their deeds for them. He made their acts of shirk (associating partners with Allah) and their other sins appear good and reasonable in their eyes. He deceived them into believing that their worship was acceptable, and he blocked them from the straight path—the path of tawheed (monotheism) and submission to Allah alone. As a result, they were deprived of true guidance, for guidance comes only to those who sincerely seek the truth and turn away from falsehood.
This verse carries a profound lesson for all of humanity: the greatest danger to a person's faith is not ignorance alone, but the deception of Satan, who makes wrong appear right and evil appear good. When a person follows their desires and abandons the revelation of Allah, they become vulnerable to this deception, and their hearts become sealed against the truth.
A Da'wah Reflection:
How merciful is Allah that He sent Prophet Sulayman—a king of immense power and wisdom—to reach out to this misguided queen and her people! He did not destroy them immediately, but instead gave them an opportunity to hear the truth and respond to it. This is the beauty of Islam: it is a message of guidance and mercy, calling people from darkness into light, from the worship of creation to the worship of the Creator.
Dear reader, reflect on your own life: are there things that Satan has made seem attractive to you, yet they distance you from Allah? The sun, the moon, the stars, wealth, status, desires—all of these are creations of Allah, and none of them deserve your worship or ultimate devotion. Only Allah, the Lord of all worlds, is worthy of your love, obedience, and submission. Turn to Him today, and He will guide you to a path of peace, success, and eternal happiness. Do not let Satan deceive you, for his promise is nothing but delusion, while the promise of Allah is true and everlasting.
