Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- الْمَلَأُ (Al-Mala'u): The chiefs, nobles, and prominent figures of a community whose counsel is sought.
- بِعَرْشِهَا (Bi-'Arshiha): Her throne — the grand seat of power and sovereignty of the Queen of Sheba (Bilqis).
- مُسْلِمِينَ (Muslimin): Those who submit willingly and obediently to Allah, surrendering themselves in faith.
Tafsir (Explanation):
Prophet Sulayman (Solomon), peace be upon him, addressed the distinguished assembly of his kingdom — comprising the leaders of the jinn and mankind whom Allah had placed under his command. He posed a remarkable challenge: "Which of you can bring me her throne before they come to me as Muslims?"
This was not a display of arrogance or worldly pride, but rather a profound demonstration of the power and blessings that Allah had bestowed upon His prophet. Sulayman knew that the Queen of Sheba and her people were on their way to submit to the truth, and he wanted to present a sign of Allah's might and the superiority of the divine message over all earthly power. The throne was a symbol of her authority and glory, and bringing it before her arrival would be a testament to the fact that the kingdom of Allah's prophet surpasses all worldly dominion.
The verse highlights the urgency and the spirit of competition among Sulayman's followers to serve the cause of truth. It also reveals the miraculous abilities granted to the jinn and humans under his command — abilities that would later be showcased when one who had knowledge of the Scripture offered to bring it in the blink of an eye.
Da'wah Reflection:
This verse inspires every believer to reflect on the greatness of Allah's power and the honor He bestows upon His righteous servants. When we submit to Allah sincerely, He grants us strength and means beyond our imagination. Sulayman's question was not merely about a physical throne — it was a call to action, urging his people to hasten in serving the cause of Allah before the opponents of truth arrive with their submission.
For us today, this teaches the value of proactiveness in good deeds. When we see the truth, we should not delay in embracing it or in supporting it with our abilities, wealth, and time. The believer who rushes to do good, even before being asked, earns the pleasure of Allah and the admiration of His creation. Let us, therefore, be among those who race toward righteousness, for Allah loves those who hasten to His obedience with sincerity and devotion.
