Translation — Tafsir

Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • "آنسْتُ" (ānastu): I perceived or caught sight of; it implies a clear and certain observation, not a mere guess.
  • "بِخَبَرٍ" (bikhabar): News or information—here, specifically guidance about the path they had lost.
  • "بِشِهَابٍ قَبَسٍ" (bishihābin qabas): A flaming torch or a burning brand—a piece of wood with fire at its tip, used for light and warmth.
  • "تَصْطَلُونَ" (tastalūn): To warm yourselves against the cold; it conveys seeking comfort from the chill of the night.

The Tafsir (Explanation):

O noble reader, Allah—the Most High—invites us to reflect upon a profound moment in the journey of His beloved Prophet Musa (peace be upon him). As Musa was traveling with his family from Madyan toward Egypt, during the intense cold of a dark winter night, he suddenly perceived a fire in the distance. This was no ordinary sight—it was a divine signal, a turning point in his life.

Musa, with the tenderness of a caring leader and the humility of a devoted servant, turned to his family and said: "I have seen a fire. I will go to it and bring you back either some news to guide us on our way, or a burning brand from it so that you may warm yourselves." Notice his words—he did not speak with arrogance or certainty of what he would find. Rather, he offered two possibilities: knowledge for their guidance, or warmth for their comfort. This teaches us a beautiful lesson in compassion and practical care for one's loved ones, even in the midst of hardship.

But what Musa did not know was that this fire was not an ordinary flame. It was the light of prophethood, the gateway to a direct conversation with his Lord. When he approached it, he was called from the blessed valley of Tuwa, and Allah chose him as a Messenger. Thus, a simple need for warmth became the beginning of a magnificent mission that would change the course of history.

This verse reminds us that Allah often places opportunities for guidance within the ordinary moments of our lives. The fire that Musa sought for physical warmth became the source of spiritual illumination. Likewise, when we seek Allah with sincerity—even in our daily struggles—He may open doors far beyond what we imagined. Let this story inspire you to trust in Allah's wisdom, to care for your family with kindness, and to remain alert to the signs of His mercy that appear along your path. For He who turned a desert fire into a beacon of revelation is capable of transforming your trials into triumphs, your darkness into light, and your cold nights into the warmth of His nearness.
