Key Words and Meanings:
- أَئِمَّةً (A'immatan): Leaders, guides, or examples whom others follow.
- يَدْعُونَ إِلَى النَّارِ (Yad'ūna ilā an-Nār): They call to the Fire — meaning they invite and lead people toward deeds that result in Hellfire.
- لَا يُنصَرُونَ (Lā yunṣarūn): They will not be aided or saved — no one will come to their rescue on the Day of Judgment.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this profound verse, Allah Almighty informs us about the fate of Pharaoh and his people after they rejected the truth and persisted in their tyranny and disbelief. Allah made them leaders and guides — but not toward righteousness; rather, they became imams (leaders) calling to the Fire. They set an evil example, and their path became a beacon of misguidance for the arrogant and the corrupt. Through their words, actions, and the systems they established, they invited others to disbelief, oppression, and sin — all of which lead straight to Hellfire.
Moreover, on the Day of Judgment, they will find no helper or protector. No one will shield them from Allah's punishment, nor will any intercession save them. In fact, their punishment is multiplied because they not only went astray themselves but also caused others to go astray. They bear the full weight of their own sins and an equal share of the sins of those who followed them in evil — without diminishing anything from the followers' burden.
This verse serves as a powerful warning: leadership carries immense responsibility. Those who use their influence to spread corruption and call others away from Allah's path will face a double punishment. Yet, the reverse is also true — those who lead others toward goodness will earn multiplied rewards.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear reader, this verse invites us to reflect deeply on the choices we make in life. Every one of us is a leader in some capacity — in our families, our communities, our workplaces. The question is: What are we calling people toward? Are we examples of light, guiding others to prayer, honesty, kindness, and the worship of Allah alone? Or are we, knowingly or unknowingly, becoming signs that lead people away from the truth?
The tragedy of Pharaoh's people was not just their own disbelief, but that they became a means of destruction for others. How many people followed them into ruin? How many souls were lost because of their influence?
Islam teaches us that we are all responsible for those around us. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Each of you is a shepherd, and each of you is responsible for his flock." This is a beautiful trust — an opportunity to earn eternal rewards by guiding even one person to the straight path. Imagine the joy of meeting your Lord on the Day of Judgment with the good deeds of those you inspired toward faith!
So, let us strive to be imams of righteousness — leaders who call to Paradise through our character, our words, and our deeds. Let us not be among those who lead others to the Fire, for that is a burden too heavy to bear. Choose today: be a light that guides, not a fire that consumes.
