Explanation of the Verse:
When the Quran is recited to those who were given the Scripture before (the sincere believers among the People of the Book, such as the companions of the Prophet ﷺ from among the Christians of Abyssinia and the Jewish scholars who recognized the truth), they do not hesitate or argue. Instead, they immediately declare: "We believe in this Quran." They affirm with certainty that it is the pure truth, sent down from their Lord — not the word of any human, nor a fabrication. They then add a profound statement: "Indeed, we were Muslims even before it came." This means that their hearts were already submitted to Allah, believing in His Oneness and in the message of all His prophets. They knew from their own Scriptures that a final prophet would come, and they had already surrendered themselves to Allah's will, awaiting this moment. So when the Quran reached them, it was not a surprise or a new religion — it was the confirmation of what they already held in their hearts. Their faith was not a reaction to hearing the Quran; rather, the Quran was the fulfillment of a promise they had long believed in. This is why they embraced it so readily, with open hearts and sincere conviction.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
This verse carries a beautiful and powerful lesson for every seeker of truth. It tells us that the religion of Allah has always been one: submission to Him alone. From Adam to Noah, from Moses to Jesus, and finally to Muhammad ﷺ — the message has always been the same: worship Allah alone and submit to His will. The sincere believers of previous nations did not wait for the truth to come to them; they prepared their hearts for it. They purified their intentions, sought the truth, and when it arrived, they recognized it instantly.
Dear reader, ask yourself: Is your heart ready to receive the truth? Do you approach the Quran with an open mind and a sincere desire to follow what is right? The people described in this verse were rewarded because they had already submitted themselves to Allah before the Quran came. They did not let pride, stubbornness, or attachment to their old ways prevent them from embracing the truth. They understood that true success lies in surrendering to Allah, not in clinging to what is familiar.
Let this verse inspire you to be among those who say, "We hear and we obey." Do not wait for a sign or a miracle — the Quran itself is the greatest miracle. Open your heart to it, read it with reflection, and let it guide you to the straight path. For the one who sincerely seeks the truth, Allah will never leave them in darkness. And when you find it, embrace it with the same conviction as those noble souls: "We believe in it; indeed, it is the truth from our Lord. We were Muslims even before it came."
