Key Words and Their Meanings:
- الْكِتَابَ (Al-Kitab): The Book, referring here to the divinely revealed scriptures given to the People of the Book before the Qur'an, such as the Torah and the Gospel.
- مِن قَبْلِهِ (Min qablihi): "Before it" — meaning before the revelation of the Qur'an.
- هُم بِهِ يُؤْمِنُونَ (Hum bihi yu'minun): "They believe in it" — the pronoun "it" refers to the Qur'an and to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
The Interpretation:
This noble verse shines a light on a beautiful reality: there were, and always will be, sincere people among the People of the Book — Jews and Christians — who remained steadfast upon the truth in their original scriptures without distortion or alteration. When the Qur'an was revealed, they recognized it immediately, because they found its descriptions and the mention of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) clearly written in their own books. Their faith was not blind or hesitant; rather, it was grounded in knowledge and confirmation, as their scriptures had already foretold the coming of this final Messenger and this final revelation.
These are the ones who were true to what they had, so Allah honored them with faith in what came after. They did not let pride, envy, or worldly interests blind them to the truth. Instead, when they heard the Qur'an, their hearts submitted, and they believed in it and in Muhammad (peace be upon him) with certainty.
This verse carries a profound lesson for every seeker of truth: the one who sincerely follows the light they have — even if it is partial — will be guided by Allah to more light. And for us as Muslims, it reminds us to honor the previous prophets and their original messages, for they all called to the same core truth: the oneness of Allah and submission to Him. The Qur'an came as a confirmation of what was before it, not a contradiction of it.
How beautiful is this verse in showing that faith is not about labels or inherited identities, but about sincerity and the pursuit of truth. These believers from among the People of the Book did not merely claim faith; they acted upon it, and Allah praised them for it. This is an invitation for all people of faith today — Jews, Christians, and Muslims — to look beyond divisions and recognize the common thread of truth that unites all divine revelations, culminating in the final message of the Qur'an.
And what a joy it is for the believer to know that the doors of guidance are open to all who sincerely seek, regardless of their background. Allah does not look at your name or your lineage, but at your heart and your deeds. So let us all strive to be among those who, when truth is presented to them, embrace it wholeheartedly — just as these righteous people did.
