Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- كَدَأْبِ (ka-da'bi): Like the custom, habit, or way of life — referring to the persistent and continuous manner in which something is done.
- آلِ فِرْعَوْنَ (aali Fir'awn): The family, followers, and supporters of Pharaoh.
- فَأَخَذَهُمُ (fa-akhadhahum): So He seized them — meaning He took them to task and punished them.
- شَدِيدُ الْعِقَابِ (shadeedul-'iqaab): Severe in punishment — One whose retribution is mighty and inescapable.
The Interpretation:
The condition of those who disbelieve and reject the truth among the disbelievers of Makkah is exactly like the condition of Pharaoh's people and the nations who came before them. They all followed the same destructive path: they denied the clear signs and miracles of Allah, refused to believe in His messengers, and persisted in their arrogance and stubbornness. So Allah seized them with His punishment because of their sins — their wealth, their power, and their families could not protect them in the least. Their end was utter ruin and humiliation.
This verse serves as a powerful warning and a timeless lesson: the sunnah (way) of Allah with those who reject His signs does not change. Just as He dealt with Pharaoh and the tyrants of old, He deals with every generation that turns away from His guidance. And Allah — may His majesty be exalted — is severe in punishment for those who disbelieve in Him and deny His messengers.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, pause and reflect on this profound truth: the same fate that befell Pharaoh and the mighty empires of old awaits every soul that rejects the truth out of pride. Their treasures, their armies, their monuments — all vanished, and nothing remained but their punishment and the lessons of their downfall. Yet Allah, in His infinite mercy, has opened the door of repentance for you today. He does not hasten to punish; He gives you time to return to Him. Do not let the arrogance of Pharaoh creep into your heart. Humble yourself before your Creator, accept His signs, and you will find a Lord who is not only severe in punishment but also vast in forgiveness and rich in mercy. The choice is yours — will you be among those who learn from the past, or among those who repeat its mistakes?
