Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Mihrab: The place of worship and prayer, specifically the chamber where Zakariya (peace be upon him) devoted himself to worship.
- Musaddiqan (مُصَدِّقًا): Believing in and affirming the truth of something.
- Kalimah min Allah (كَلِمَةٍ مِّنَ اللَّهِ): The word from Allah, referring to Prophet 'Isa (Jesus), peace be upon him, who was created by Allah's command "Be," without a father.
- Sayyid (سَيِّدًا): A master, a leader, one who is noble and respected among his people.
- Hasur (حَصُورًا): One who restrains himself from desires and sins, particularly refraining from approaching women, devoting himself entirely to worship.
Tafsir (Explanation):
While Zakariya (peace be upon him) stood in deep devotion, praying in his sacred chamber, the angels called out to him with glad tidings that would fill his heart with joy and wonder. Despite his old age and his wife's barrenness, Allah's mercy knew no bounds. The angels announced: "Allah gives you good news of a son named Yahya (John)."
This blessed child would be one who believes in the Word from Allah — that is, 'Isa (Jesus), peace be upon him — affirming his prophethood and his miraculous birth as a sign of Allah's infinite power. Yahya would be the first to believe in 'Isa and testify to his truth.
Moreover, Yahya would be a sayyid — a master and leader among his people, excelling in knowledge, wisdom, and piety. He would be hasur — one who restrains his desires, keeping himself pure from worldly pleasures and sins, dedicating his life entirely to the worship of his Lord. And above all, he would be a prophet from among the righteous — one who reached the highest ranks of righteousness and closeness to Allah.
This was a profound answer to Zakariya's heartfelt supplication. He had called upon his Lord in secret, with humility and hope, and Allah responded with a gift beyond his expectations — not only a son but a prophet, a leader, and a model of purity.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear believer, look at the beauty of this scene! Zakariya was not in a palace or among crowds; he was alone in his prayer niche, standing before his Lord in the stillness of worship. And it was in that very moment of sincere devotion that the angels descended with glad tidings.
This teaches us a profound lesson: when you stand in prayer, when you turn to Allah in your quiet moments, you are never truly alone. The angels witness your devotion, and Allah responds to your supplications in ways you could never imagine. Do not underestimate the power of a sincere prayer offered in the depths of the night or in the quiet corners of your day. Your Lord hears you, and His response may come when you least expect it — just as it came to Zakariya while he stood praying.
So hold fast to your prayers, for they are the moments when heaven draws near to earth, and the gates of divine mercy open wide.
