Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- "Hunālika" (هُنَالِكَ): "At that moment" or "there and then" — referring to the specific time and place when Zakariyyā witnessed the extraordinary scene.
- "Hab lī" (هَبْ لِي): "Grant me" or "bestow upon me" — a humble plea for a divine gift.
- "Min ladunka" (مِن لَّدُنكَ): "From Your own presence" or "from Your side" — signifying a gift that comes directly from Allah’s grace, not through ordinary means.
- "Dhurriyyah tayyibah" (ذُرِّيَّةً طَيِّبَةً): "Pure and righteous offspring" — a child who is virtuous, blessed, and pleasing to Allah.
- "Samīʿu ad-duʿāʾ" (سَمِيعُ الدُّعَاءِ): "The All-Hearing of supplication" — the One who hears every prayer and responds to those who call upon Him.
Tafsir (Explanation):
At that very moment — when Zakariyyā (peace be upon him) witnessed the extraordinary scene of Maryam (peace be upon her) receiving provisions from Allah that were beyond the natural means of sustenance, and saw how Allah provided for her in ways that defied human expectation — his heart was filled with awe and hope. He realized that the One who could provide for Maryam in such a miraculous manner was certainly capable of answering his own heartfelt prayer, no matter how impossible it seemed by human standards.
Zakariyyā was an elderly man, advanced in years, and his wife was barren. By all human logic, the door to having a child was firmly closed. Yet, when he saw the power of Allah manifested before his very eyes, his hope was rekindled. He turned to his Lord with a sincere and humble heart, saying: "My Lord, grant me from Your own presence a pure and righteous offspring — a child who will be blessed, virtuous, and devoted to You. Indeed, You are the All-Hearing of supplication; You hear every prayer, no matter how quiet or how desperate, and You respond to those who call upon You with sincerity."
This beautiful moment teaches us a profound lesson: no matter how old we are, how difficult our circumstances may seem, or how impossible our dreams appear, we should never lose hope in the mercy and power of Allah. The same Allah who provided for Maryam in her seclusion, who gave her fruits out of season, is the One who can grant us our heart's desires in ways we never imagined. Zakariyyā did not let his age or his wife's condition discourage him; instead, he turned to the Creator of all causes and effects, knowing that His command is simply "Be" — and it is.
This supplication also shows us the etiquette of duʿāʾ: acknowledging Allah's perfect attributes (such as His hearing of all prayers), expressing our need with humility, and asking for what is good and pure — not just any child, but a *tayyib* (pure and righteous) one. When we pray, we should ask for the best, not merely for what we think we need, and we should always combine our request with praise and recognition of Allah's greatness.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, let this verse inspire you to never give up on your prayers, no matter how long you have been waiting or how impossible your situation may appear. Zakariyyā's story is a testament to the fact that Allah's mercy is not limited by age, circumstance, or human capability. When you feel that all doors are closed, remember that the One who opens doors is not bound by locks. Turn to Him with a sincere heart, as Zakariyyā did, and ask Him for what is pure and good — for yourself, your family, and your future. And know, with certainty, that He hears every word you utter in the quiet of your heart, and He answers in the way that is best for you, whether now or later, in this world or the next.
May Allah grant us all the purity of heart and sincerity of intention that Zakariyyā possessed, and may He bless us with righteous offspring and pure provisions from His endless grace. Āmīn.
