Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Rabbi (My Lord): The One who created, nurtures, and sustains — the sole Deity worthy of worship.
- Fa'buduhu (So worship Him): Direct your devotion, obedience, and submission exclusively to Him.
- Siratun Mustaqeem (A Straight Path): The clear, upright way that leads to Allah's pleasure and Paradise, with no deviation or crookedness.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this noble verse, Prophet 'Isa (Jesus, peace be upon him) declares to his people the essence of his message — a message that echoes the call of every prophet before and after him. He says: "Indeed, Allah is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him."
This statement carries profound meaning. The Prophet 'Isa, despite the high rank Allah granted him, openly affirms his complete servitude to Allah. He places himself on the same level as his people in terms of worship — all are slaves of Allah, none is divine, and none shares in Allah's exclusive right to be worshipped. The phrase "my Lord and your Lord" emphasizes the unity of divinity: the One who created 'Isa is the very same One who created his people. There is no distinction in His Lordship over all creation.
Then he concludes: "This is a straight path." Meaning, this call to pure monotheism — to single out Allah alone for worship, obedience, and reverence — is the path that leads to salvation. It is the path that the prophets traversed, the path that brings peace to the heart, and the path that ends in eternal bliss. There is no crookedness in it, no confusion, and no contradiction — because it comes from the One who is All-Wise and All-Knowing.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, contemplate the beauty of this verse. The Messiah himself — a mighty prophet who healed the blind and the leper, who spoke in the cradle, and who was raised to the heavens — declared his need for Allah and his complete submission to Him. If the Messiah is a servant of Allah, then who among us can claim independence from Allah's mercy and guidance?
This verse invites you to taste the sweetness of true faith: to free your heart from worshipping anything other than Allah — whether it be desires, wealth, status, or even the reverence of righteous figures beyond what Allah has permitted. When you make Allah alone your Lord and your object of worship, your life gains clarity, your heart finds rest, and your steps become firm upon the straight path.
The path of Islam is not a burden; it is liberation. It frees you from the confusion of multiple loyalties and false objects of devotion. It connects you directly to your Creator, without intermediaries, without mystery, without contradiction. This is the path that the prophets — from Adam to Muhammad, peace be upon them all — called humanity towards. And it remains open before you today, inviting you to take that first step towards your Lord, who says in His Book: "And whoever holds firmly to Allah has indeed been guided to a straight path" (Aal-Imran 3:101).
So respond to the call of your Lord, and let your heart proclaim with certainty: "Indeed, Allah is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him — this is the straight path."
