Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse continues to expose the schemes and inner thoughts of the People of the Book (the Jews of Madinah) who, after witnessing the truth of Islam, advised one another secretly: "Do not truly believe anyone except those who follow your own religion." They wanted to keep their knowledge and status exclusive, fearing that if the Muslims learned what they knew, they would become equal to them in understanding, or even surpass them, and then use that knowledge as an argument against them before their Lord.
Allah commands His Prophet ﷺ to respond to their misguided statement: "Say: Indeed, the true guidance is the guidance of Allah." Meaning: guidance is not something you possess or control; it is purely in Allah’s Hands. He guides whom He wills to the truth, regardless of race, lineage, or nationality. Their fear that others might receive similar knowledge or argue with them is irrelevant, because Allah grants wisdom and understanding to whom He pleases.
Then Allah instructs the Prophet ﷺ to say: "Indeed, all bounty is in the Hand of Allah; He grants it to whom He wills." This is a powerful reminder that divine favour is not monopolised by any one group. Allah’s mercy and grace are vast, and He is not limited by human expectations. He is Wāsi‘ (All-Encompassing in His generosity) and ‘Alīm (All-Knowing of who truly deserves His favour).
A Da‘wah Reflection:
This verse carries a timeless lesson for all believers: never let jealousy, exclusivity, or fear of losing status prevent you from sharing the truth. The People of the Book tried to hoard knowledge and keep others away from guidance, but Allah made it clear that His bounty is open to all who sincerely seek it. As Muslims, we should be the opposite — eager to share the beautiful message of Islam with others, knowing that guidance is in Allah’s Hands alone. If someone else receives knowledge or success, it is because Allah, the All-Wise, chose to give it to them. So let your heart be free from envy, and trust that Allah’s generosity knows no bounds. He gives to whom He wills, and He knows exactly where to place His favour. This is a call to humility, sincerity, and open-heartedness — qualities that make a believer truly beloved to Allah and to people.
