Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Yakhtassu (يَخْتَصُّ): He singles out or selects exclusively.
- Bi-rahmatihi (بِرَحْمَتِهِ): With His mercy — referring here to prophethood, divine guidance, and His special favor.
- Dhu al-Fadl al-‘Azim (ذُو الْفَضْلِ الْعَظِيمِ): The Owner of immense bounty and grace, whose generosity knows no bounds.
Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse stands as a profound declaration of Allah’s absolute sovereignty and wisdom in bestowing His favors. Allah, the Exalted, singles out from among His creation whomsoever He wills for His special mercy — granting prophethood, complete guidance, and the most perfect of laws to those He chooses. This is not a matter of human merit alone, but of divine wisdom and will. He selects His messengers and guides whom He pleases, and He grants various forms of His bounty to whom He pleases, whether it be knowledge, righteousness, leadership, or other blessings.
This verse also serves as a decisive response to those who claimed that prophethood was reserved exclusively for the Children of Israel, or that it would remain with them forever. Allah refutes this notion by affirming that His mercy and selection are not confined to any particular people or lineage. He bestows His grace upon whom He wills, and He may choose a prophet from among the Arabs, as He did with Muhammad (peace be upon him), just as He chose messengers from other nations before. No one can restrict or dictate the terms of Allah’s mercy, for He is the Owner of infinite bounty — a bounty that surpasses all human imagination and limitation.
Da‘wah Reflection:
Dear reader, this verse carries a beautiful and hopeful message for every believer. It tells you that Allah’s mercy is not a closed door, nor is it reserved for a specific group or nation. His grace is vast and His selection is wise. If you find yourself yearning for guidance, for closeness to Allah, or for His special favor, know that His mercy is within reach — for He chooses whom He wills, and He may very well choose you. Do not despair of His mercy, and do not think that your lineage, your past sins, or your circumstances disqualify you. Rather, turn to Him sincerely, strive in His path, and ask Him to include you among those whom He has singled out for His mercy and favor. For indeed, Allah is the Owner of the greatest bounty, and His generosity is beyond measure.
