Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Arbāban (أَرْبَابًا): Lords or deities worshipped besides Allah; masters deserving of absolute obedience and worship.
- Kufr (الْكُفْرِ): Disbelief in Allah; ingratitude toward His blessings and rejection of His commands.
- Muslimūn (مُسْلِمُونَ): Those who have submitted fully to Allah’s will, surrendering their hearts and actions to Him alone.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse continues to affirm the exalted character and mission of the Prophets, peace be upon them all. It declares that it is utterly inconceivable for a Prophet of Allah to command people to take the angels or the Prophets themselves as lords to be worshipped instead of Allah.
History shows us how some people went astray in this matter: the pagans of Quraysh claimed that the angels were daughters of Allah and worshipped them, while some among the Jews and Christians exaggerated the status of their Prophets—such as Ezra and Jesus, peace be upon them—until they turned them into objects of worship. But the Prophets were sent precisely to call people to the pure worship of Allah alone, to teach them His laws, and to guide them to His path. How could one who was chosen by Allah to deliver this message ever command the opposite?
The verse then poses a powerful rhetorical question, filled with astonishment and rebuke: "Would he command you to disbelief after you have submitted to Allah?" This is an impossibility, a logical absurdity. A Prophet would never call people to kufr after they have already embraced Islam and surrendered their will to their Creator. Such a command would contradict the very essence of prophethood and the message of Tawheed (monotheism) that every Prophet brought.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, ponder the beauty of this divine guidance. Islam protects your intellect and your heart from falling into blind imitation or the worship of created beings, no matter how noble they may be. The Prophets and angels are honored servants of Allah, but they are not partners with Him in divinity. They themselves worshipped Allah and called others to do the same.
This verse is a reminder of the pure, untainted message of Islam: total devotion to Allah alone. It invites you to a faith that is logical, consistent, and free from contradictions. How beautiful is this religion that elevates you by connecting you directly to your Creator, without intermediaries, and protects you from every form of shirk (associating partners with Allah)! Embrace this truth with a sincere heart, and you will find peace, purpose, and the ultimate success in this life and the Hereafter.
