📖 English Meaning
And [recall, O People of the Scripture], when Allah took the covenant of the prophets, [saying], "Whatever I give you of the Scripture and wisdom and then there comes to you a messenger confirming what is with you, you [must] believe in him and support him." [Allah] said, "Have you acknowledged and taken upon that My commitment?" They said, "We have acknowledged it." He said, "Then bear witness, and I am with you among the witnesses."

Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Meethaq (ميثاق): A solemn, binding covenant or pledge.
  • Nabiyyeen (النبيين): The Prophets (peace be upon them all).
  • Hikmah (حكمة): Wisdom, prophetic knowledge, and sound judgment.
  • Musaddiq (مصدق): One who confirms and affirms the truth of what came before him.
  • Isri (إصري): My covenant, my binding pledge, my solemn agreement.

The Interpretation:

Remember, O Messenger, the moment when Allah took a profound and solemn covenant from all the Prophets (peace be upon them). He addressed them, saying: "Whatever I have given you of the Book and wisdom, and whatever high station you have reached — when a Messenger comes to you from Me, confirming the truth that is already with you, you must believe in him and you must support him." This Messenger is Muhammad (peace be upon him), the final seal of all Prophets. The covenant was not merely for the Prophets themselves, but also for their nations — that they too would believe in him and aid him if they were to witness his time.

Then Allah asked them: "Do you affirm this and accept My binding covenant upon this condition?" They replied: "We do affirm it." Allah then said: "Then bear witness to this covenant, you upon yourselves and upon your peoples, and I am with you among the witnesses."

This verse carries a profound and beautiful message: Allah, in His infinite wisdom, took this covenant from every Prophet throughout history — from Adam to Jesus (peace be upon them all) — that they would believe in Muhammad (peace be upon him) and support him. This is why every Prophet before him gave glad tidings of his coming to their nations. It shows the unity of the divine message: all Prophets called to the same truth — the worship of Allah alone — and they all prepared their followers for the final Messenger.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

This verse is a powerful reminder for us today. If the Prophets themselves were bound by this covenant to believe in and support the final Messenger, how much more are we — who actually live in his time and follow his way — obligated to believe in him, love him, and support his message? Our support for him is not merely through words, but through living by his Sunnah, spreading his message with wisdom and beautiful preaching, and embodying his noble character in our daily lives.

The covenant also gives us a sense of honor and responsibility. We are the inheritors of this prophetic mission. Every Muslim who reads this verse should feel a deep connection to this chain of Prophets — from Adam to Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and finally Muhammad (peace be upon them all) — all united in the same message of monotheism and submission to Allah. This is the beauty of Islam: it is not a new religion, but the culmination and completion of the message that every Prophet brought.

So let us renew our own covenant with Allah today. Let us pledge to believe in His Messenger wholeheartedly, to support his cause with our wealth, our words, and our deeds, and to carry this beautiful message of mercy and guidance to all of humanity. For Allah is a witness over us, and He has promised to help those who help His religion.

📜 Verse 79-83 — Aal-Imran

It is not for a human [prophet] that Allah should give him the Scripture and authority and prophethood and then he would say to the people, "Be servants to me rather than Allah," but [instead, he would say], "Be pious scholars of the Lord because of what you have taught of the Scripture and because of what you have studied."
Nor could he order you to take the angels and prophets as lords. Would he order you to disbelief after you had been Muslims?
And [recall, O People of the Scripture], when Allah took the covenant of the prophets, [saying], "Whatever I give you of the Scripture and wisdom and then there comes to you a messenger confirming what is with you, you [must] believe in him and support him." [Allah] said, "Have you acknowledged and taken upon that My commitment?" They said, "We have acknowledged it." He said, "Then bear witness, and I am with you among the witnesses."
And whoever turned away after that - they were the defiantly disobedient.
So is it other than the religion of Allah they desire, while to Him have submitted [all] those within the heavens and earth, willingly or by compulsion, and to Him they will be returned?
