Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Al-Kitab (الْكِتَابَ): The revealed Scripture — for Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, this refers to the Qur'an.
- Al-Hukm (الْحُكْمَ): Wisdom, sound judgment, deep understanding, and the ability to judge rightly between people.
- An-Nubuwwah (النُّبُوَّةَ): Prophethood — the special selection by Allah to convey His message.
- Rabbaniyyin (رَبَّانِيِّينَ): People devoted to Allah — learned scholars who worship their Lord, teach others, and guide them with knowledge and action.
- Tu'allimun (تُعَلِّمُونَ): You teach others.
- Tadrusun (تَدْرُسُونَ): You study, recite, and reflect upon.
Explanation of the Verse:
This noble verse establishes a fundamental truth about the character of Allah's chosen messengers and the scholars who follow their path. It is utterly impossible — and logically inconceivable — that a human being whom Allah has honored with the revelation of His Book, blessed with profound wisdom and understanding, and elevated to the rank of prophethood, would then turn to the people and say: "Worship me instead of Allah." Such a call would contradict the very essence of prophethood, for every prophet's mission from the first to the last was to direct people exclusively to the worship of Allah alone.
Rather, the natural and fitting call of such a divinely favored person is to say to the people: "Be devoted servants of Allah — rabbaniyyin." This means: become people of deep faith and knowledge, who worship Allah with sincerity, who learn His Book and teach it to others, who act upon what they know, and who guide society toward righteousness and reform. The true scholar does not seek followers for himself; he seeks to raise a generation that is devoted to Allah, knowledgeable in His religion, and beneficial to humanity.
The verse then explains the basis of this call: it is because you teach the Book of Allah to others and you yourselves study it diligently — reciting it, memorizing it, understanding it, and living by it. This continuous engagement with the Qur'an naturally produces hearts that are attached to Allah, not to any human being. The more one learns and teaches the divine revelation, the more one realizes the greatness of Allah and the insignificance of any creature before Him.
This verse also serves as a powerful refutation of those who might claim that religious leadership leads to self-worship or the worship of saints and prophets. Islam categorically rejects any form of elevating human beings to divine status. Even the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, the most honored of all creation, never called people to worship him — rather, he said: "I am only a servant of Allah and His Messenger."
A Da'wah Reflection for the Reader:
Dear reader, reflect on the beauty of this divine guidance. Islam does not call you to follow a man blindly, nor to worship any human being, no matter how righteous or learned. Islam calls you to become a person of knowledge and action — a *rabbani* — one whose heart is connected to Allah, whose mind is illuminated by the Qur'an, and whose hands serve humanity. The more you study the Book of Allah and teach it to others, the more your soul rises in purity and your character becomes a living example of Islamic values.
This is the path of the prophets and the righteous. It is a path open to every sincere seeker of truth. You do not need a mediator between you and Allah; you have the Qur'an in your hands, and you have the living example of the Prophet ﷺ. Read, learn, teach, and act — and you will find yourself among the *rabbaniyyin* whom Allah honors in this life and the next.
