Word Meanings:

  • "Rahmah" (رَحْمَةً): A mercy or blessing from Allah, such as rain, health, wealth, or ease.
  • "Farihū" (فَرِحُوا): They rejoiced — but here it means the joy of arrogance and heedlessness, not the joy of gratitude.
  • "Sayyi'ah" (سَيِّئَةٌ): A hardship or affliction, such as illness, poverty, drought, or fear.
  • "Yaqnaṭūn" (يَقْنَطُونَ): They despair — losing all hope in Allah's mercy, believing that relief will never come.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this profound verse, Allah describes the nature of most human beings when faced with the alternating conditions of life. When Allah bestows His mercy upon people — whether it be good health, abundant provision, rain after drought, or any other blessing — they rejoice, but often with a joy of arrogance and pride, as if they earned it themselves. They forget the Giver and become intoxicated with the gift, showing no humility or gratitude.

However, when a hardship befalls them — whether illness, poverty, fear, or any trial — due to the sins and wrongdoings their own hands have committed, they immediately fall into despair and lose all hope in Allah's mercy. They act as though the door of divine compassion has been sealed forever, forgetting that the same Lord who tested them is also the One who can relieve them.

This verse highlights a dangerous spiritual imbalance: excessive pride in times of ease and utter hopelessness in times of hardship. Both extremes are blameworthy. The believer, in contrast, is called to a middle path — gratitude in prosperity and patient hope in adversity. When blessed, they thank Allah with humility; when tested, they turn to Him with repentance and trust, knowing that His mercy encompasses all things.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, this verse is a mirror for your soul. It invites you to examine your own reaction to life's ups and downs. Are you among those who become arrogant when wealth comes and despairing when trials strike? Or are you among the wise who see both as tests from Allah?

Know that the very fact that hardship comes from your own deeds is itself a mercy — for it reminds you to return to your Lord before it is too late. And know that no matter how dark the night of trial may seem, the dawn of His mercy is always near. Allah says elsewhere: *"Do not despair of the mercy of Allah; indeed, Allah forgives all sins"* (Az-Zumar 39:53). Despair is a sin because it doubts the infinite compassion of the Most Merciful.

So, when ease comes, let your joy be the joy of gratitude — use it to draw closer to Allah, to help others, and to strengthen your faith. And when hardship comes, let your heart remain anchored in hope — for the One who tests you is the One who can heal you, and His mercy is far greater than your sins, your trials, and your weaknesses. This is the path of the true believer — a life of balance, gratitude, and unwavering trust in Allah's wisdom and love.

📜 Verse 34-38 — Ar-Rum

So that they will deny what We have granted them. Then enjoy yourselves, for you are going to know.
Or have We sent down to them an authority, and it speaks of what they were associating with Him?
And when We let the people taste mercy, they rejoice therein, but if evil afflicts them for what their hands have put forth, immediately they despair.
Do they not see that Allah extends provision for whom He wills and restricts [it]? Indeed, in that are signs for a people who believe.
So give the relative his right, as well as the needy and the traveler. That is best for those who desire the countenance of Allah, and it is they who will be the successful.
