Word Meanings:
- Yabsutu (يَبْسُطُ): To expand, widen, or increase abundantly.
- Ar-Rizq (الرِّزْق): Provision, sustenance, livelihood — encompassing all that Allah provides for His creation.
- Yaqdiru (يَقْدِرُ): To restrict, tighten, or measure out in limited quantities.
- Ayat (آيَات): Signs, proofs, or clear indicators that point to a deeper reality.
Explanation of the Verse:
Have these people not observed and reflected upon the fact that Allah alone is the One who expands provision for whom He wills, and restricts it for whom He wills? He gives wealth, health, and abundance to some, while others experience scarcity and hardship — and all of this happens by His perfect wisdom and decree.
This expansion and restriction are not random or arbitrary. When Allah grants abundance to someone, it is a test: will that person be grateful, humble, and generous, or will they become arrogant, heedless, and ungrateful? When Allah tightens provision for someone, it is also a test: will they remain patient, trust in Allah, and turn to Him in supplication, or will they complain, despair, and resent the decree?
Indeed, in this divine distribution of sustenance — the widening and the narrowing — there are profound signs and clear lessons for people who truly believe. Those who have faith see beyond the surface of wealth and poverty. They recognize the hand of Allah in every situation, understanding that He gives and withholds out of His infinite wisdom, mercy, and justice. For the believer, prosperity is an opportunity to give thanks and share, while hardship is an opportunity to exercise patience and draw closer to Allah.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear reader, look around you with the eyes of faith. Why does one person enjoy abundant wealth while another struggles to make ends meet? Why does one family live in comfort while another faces difficulty? The answer lies in this beautiful verse: Allah, in His infinite wisdom, expands and restricts provision as He pleases — not out of injustice or favoritism, but as a divine test tailored to each soul.
This truth liberates you from envy and despair. When you see someone with more, do not resent them — for their wealth is their trial. When you face scarcity, do not lose hope — for your patience is your path to reward. The believer understands that this worldly provision is not the true measure of success. What matters is how you respond to whatever Allah has given you.
So, whether you find yourself in ease or in difficulty, remember that your Lord is watching how you react. Will you be among the grateful? Will you be among the patient? These are the signs for those who believe — so open your heart to them, and let your faith transform every circumstance into a means of drawing nearer to your Creator. For indeed, in every expansion and every restriction, there is a lesson, a mercy, and a path to eternal success.
