Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Sulṭān (سلطانًا): A clear, decisive proof, authority, or evidence—here referring to a revealed scripture or an undeniable argument.
- Yatakallam (يتكلم): Speaks, articulates, or explicitly states.
- Yushrikūn (يشركون): Their act of associating partners with Allah in worship (shirk).
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse addresses the polytheists of Makkah who persisted in worshipping idols and other false deities alongside Allah, despite having no rational or revealed basis for doing so. Allah poses a rhetorical question, rebuking them: "Have We sent down to them a clear authority—a book or a decisive proof—that speaks in favor of their shirk and validates their false beliefs?" The implied answer is a firm "No."
No divine revelation has ever sanctioned polytheism. Every scripture sent by Allah—from the Torah to the Gospel to the Qur’an—has consistently called for pure monotheism (Tawḥīd) and the exclusive worship of Allah alone. The polytheists possess no heavenly book, no prophetic message, and no rational argument to justify their practices. Their claim rests solely on blind imitation of their ancestors and personal whims, not on any authentic source of guidance.
The verse challenges them to produce such a proof if they truly have one—a challenge they can never meet. It exposes the emptiness of their position and affirms that true guidance, from the very beginning, has always been the worship of the One True God.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
This verse invites every seeker of truth to ponder: Where do our beliefs come from? Are they rooted in revelation, reason, and sincerity—or merely in inherited customs and unexamined traditions? Islam stands on the firm foundation of clear evidence: the Qur’an, which challenges humanity to reflect, reason, and verify. It is a book that speaks to the intellect and the heart, calling people to the pure worship of their Creator—a worship that liberates the soul from the shackles of false gods and superstitions.
Let this verse be a reminder that Allah, in His infinite mercy, has never left humanity without guidance. He sent prophets, revealed books, and perfected His final message in the Qur’an—a living miracle that continues to guide those who seek the truth with sincerity. Embrace this light, and you will find peace, purpose, and a direct connection to the Lord of all worlds.
