Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- "Al-Riyah" (الرياح) – The winds; specifically in this context, the winds of mercy (the north, east, and south winds) that carry clouds and bring rain, as opposed to the destructive west wind.
- "Mubashshirat" (مبشرات) – Bringers of good news; winds that herald the approach of rain and fill hearts with hope.
- "Al-Fulk" (الفلك) – Ships and vessels that sail across the seas.
- "Tastaghū min fadlih" (تبتغوا من فضله) – To seek His bounty, such as through trade, livelihood, and lawful provision.
- "Tashkurūn" (تشكرون) – To show gratitude to Allah for His countless blessings, which leads to even more of His favor.
The Tafsir (Explanation):
Among the magnificent signs of Allah—proofs of His Oneness, His perfect power, and His sole right to be worshipped—is that He sends the winds as carriers of glad tidings. These winds stir the clouds, gather them, and drive them toward parched lands, giving people hope that rain is near. When the rain falls, it revives dead earth, brings forth vegetation, fills wells and rivers, and provides sustenance for humans, animals, and crops alike. Through this, Allah lets you taste a portion of His vast mercy, a mercy that encompasses all things.
Moreover, by His command alone, these same winds move ships across the seas—vessels that carry goods, connect nations, and facilitate trade. This enables you to seek His bounty through lawful commerce and travel, unlocking provisions you could never reach otherwise. All of this—the winds, the rain, the sailing ships, the flourishing trade—is orchestrated by Allah’s will and wisdom, not by chance or nature’s own doing.
Why does He do all this? So that you may reflect, appreciate, and give thanks. Gratitude is not merely a word on the tongue; it is recognizing Allah’s favors, using them in obedience to Him, and worshipping Him alone. When you thank Him, He promises to increase you in His blessings. And when you turn away, you only lose what your own hands have earned.
So look around you, dear reader: the breeze that touches your face, the rain that waters your land, the ship that carries your goods—all are invitations from your Lord to know Him, love Him, and thank Him. Let these signs awaken your heart, for they are not random events but divine messages calling you to the path of gratitude and faith. The One who controls the winds and the waves is the One who deserves your worship, your trust, and your praise. He is Al-Rahman, the Most Merciful, who opens doors of provision and mercy for you at every moment—so do not let a single blessing pass without a heart full of thanks.
