Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- الْعُمْيِ (al-ʿumyi): The blind — here referring metaphorically to those whose hearts are blind to the truth, not the physically blind.
- عَن ضَلَالَتِهِمْ (ʿan ḍalālatihim): From their misguidance — meaning turning them away from their error.
- إِن تُسْمِعُ (in tusmiʿu): You cannot make hear — i.e., you cannot make them understand or accept in a way that benefits them.
- مُسْلِمُونَ (muslimūn): Those who submit — fully obedient and surrendered to Allah’s command.
Explanation of the Verse:
O Messenger, you are not the one who can guide those whose hearts are blind — those whom Allah has sealed in their misguidance — to the straight path. Just as a physically blind person cannot see the road before him, so too the one whose spiritual sight has been blinded cannot perceive the light of truth, no matter how clearly it is presented. Your role, dear Prophet, is not to force guidance upon them; that is solely in the Hands of Allah.
You cannot make anyone hear with the hearing of acceptance and benefit, except those who truly believe in Our signs — the verses of the Qur’an and the proofs of Allah’s oneness. It is only the believer whose heart is open, who listens with sincerity, and who responds with submission. Such people are the ones who surrender themselves wholly to their Lord — they are the *muslimūn*, obedient and humble before His command.
This verse carries a profound lesson for every caller to Islam: your duty is to convey the message with clarity and wisdom, but the outcome — the opening of hearts — belongs to Allah alone. Do not grieve over those who turn away, for even the Prophet ﷺ could not guide the blind-hearted. Yet rejoice in the believers, for their faith is a gift from Allah, and their submission is the fruit of His mercy.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, this verse invites you to examine your own heart. Are you among those who hear the truth and respond with submission? Or are you among those who turn away, their hearts sealed by pride and heedlessness? The Qur’an is not a book to be debated — it is a light to be followed. When you read its verses, let them penetrate your soul, and let your response be that of the true believers: *samiʿnā wa aṭaʿnā* — "We hear and we obey." For the one who submits to Allah finds peace in this life and success in the Hereafter. Do not let your heart become blind, for the blind in this world will be raised blind in the next. Open your eyes today, and let the light of faith guide you to eternal happiness.
