Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Haqq (الحق): The Absolute Truth, the One whose existence is certain, whose divinity is real, and whose words and promises are true.
- Al-Batil (الباطل): Falsehood; that which has no real existence or foundation, and which will inevitably perish.
- Al-Aliyy (العلي): The Most High, Exalted in His essence, His power, and His supremacy over all creation.
- Al-Kabir (الكبير): The Great, the Supreme, the One who is greater than everything and everyone, and to whom all things are submissive.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse comes as a powerful conclusion to the signs of Allah’s might and wisdom mentioned earlier — the creation of the heavens and the earth, the alternation of night and day, the ships sailing through the sea, and the rain that revives the dead earth. All of these are not random events; they are living proofs that lead the mindful heart to a single, undeniable truth.
Allah tells us: "That is because Allah — He is the Truth." Everything you see around you — the precise order, the perfect design, the overwhelming power — all of it testifies that Allah alone is the True God. His essence is true, His attributes are true, His actions are true, and His worship is the only worship that is valid. He is the Reality upon which the entire universe stands.
"And that whatever they call upon besides Him is falsehood." The idols, the false gods, the imagined deities that people turn to — all of them are pure falsehood. They have no reality, no power, no benefit, and no harm. They are like a mirage in the desert: from a distance it looks like water, but when you approach it, you find nothing. Falsehood, no matter how grand it may appear, is destined to vanish, while the Truth of Allah remains forever.
"And that Allah — He is the Most High, the Great." He is exalted above all His creation in His essence, His power, and His dominion. Nothing in the heavens or the earth escapes His knowledge or His control. He is greater than every problem you face, greater than every fear in your heart, greater than every obstacle in your path. And because He is the Greatest, He alone deserves your love, your hope, your fear, and your complete submission.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, pause for a moment and look around you. The sun rises and sets with precision. The stars guide travelers in the darkness. Your heart beats without you commanding it. Your lungs breathe without you thinking about it. All of this is the work of the One True God — the Truth that never fails.
So why would you turn to falsehood? Why would you place your hopes in creations that cannot even protect themselves? The One who created you, who sustains you, who hears your whispers and knows your secrets — He is the Truth. Turn to Him, and you will find peace. Rely on Him, and you will never be disappointed. Worship Him alone, and you will taste the sweetness of true freedom — freedom from the slavery of false gods, false desires, and false fears.
This is the call of the Qur'an: to free your heart from everything that is not Allah, and to anchor it in the One who is the Truth, the Most High, the Great. And when you do, you will discover that there is nothing more beautiful, more reassuring, and more fulfilling than knowing that your Lord is the Greatest of all.
