Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Sādatanā (سَادَتَنَا): Our leaders, chiefs, and those whom we held in high esteem and followed.
  • Kubarā'anā (وَكُبَرَاءَنَا): Our great ones, the influential elders and prominent figures among us.
  • Fa'aḍallūnā (فَأَضَلُّونَا): They led us astray, caused us to deviate and lose the right path.
  • Sabīlā (السَّبِيلَا): The path, specifically the straight path of guidance and true faith.

Tafsir (Explanation):

On the Day of Judgment, when the disbelievers are surrounded by the blazing Fire and see the reality of their deeds, they will turn to their Lord with a plea that exposes the root of their ruin. They will say: *"Our Lord, indeed we obeyed our leaders and our great ones, and they led us astray from the right path."*

This confession reveals a painful truth: these people did not stray on their own. They had leaders, chiefs, and influential figures whom they followed blindly—without questioning, without verifying, and without measuring their commands against the revelation of Allah. These leaders, driven by arrogance, worldly desires, or sheer ignorance, steered them away from the path of guidance, faith, and righteousness, plunging them into misguidance and destruction.

The verse carries a profound lesson for every believer: blind obedience to anyone—whether a political leader, a religious figure, a social influencer, or a family elder—when it contradicts the commands of Allah and His Messenger, is a fatal error. The followers and the followed will share in the punishment, as both bear responsibility for the deviation. The followers are accountable for their choice to obey, and the leaders are accountable for their role in misguiding others.

This scene is a powerful reminder that on that Day, no excuse will save a person. Claiming "we were just following our leaders" will not be accepted, because every soul is responsible for its own choices. Allah has given every human being intellect, free will, and the guidance of the Qur'an and Sunnah—so no one can claim ignorance or compulsion.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, this verse is not merely a story of the past—it is a mirror for the present. In every era, there are those who lead others away from Allah, whether through false ideologies, corrupt values, or misleading interpretations of religion. The believer must be vigilant, discerning, and courageous enough to say "no" to any command that contradicts the Book of Allah and the authentic Sunnah of His Messenger ﷺ.

Let this verse inspire you to seek knowledge, to verify what you hear, and to anchor your life in the Qur'an and the prophetic guidance. Do not surrender your intellect or your faith to anyone, no matter how great they may seem. The path to Allah is clear, and those who walk it with sincerity will never be led astray—for Allah Himself is their Guardian and Guide.

And remember: the leaders who misguide others carry a double burden of sin—their own misguidance and the misguidance of those who follow them. So be a leader of good, not a follower of evil. Be among those who guide others to the light, not those who drag them into the darkness. May Allah protect us all from being among the misled or the misleaders, and may He grant us the wisdom to follow only the path that leads to His pleasure and His Paradise.

O you who have believed, be not like those who abused Moses; then Allah cleared him of what they said. And he, in the sight of Allah, was distinguished.
