Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- تُقَلَّبُ وُجُوهُهُمْ – Their faces will be turned over and over, from one side to another, as they are dragged and burned in the Fire.
- يَا لَيْتَنَا – An expression of intense regret and wishing; "Oh, would that we had…"
- أَطَعْنَا اللَّهَ وَأَطَعْنَا الرَّسُولَا – "We had obeyed Allah and obeyed the Messenger" – the extra *alif* at the end of "الرسولا" is for emphasis and poetic rhythm in the Arabic original.
Explanation of the Verse:
On the Day of Judgment, when the disbelievers and the sinful are cast into the Hellfire, their faces will be turned over and over — now on one side, now on the other — as the flames scorch them from every angle. In that moment of utter humiliation and unbearable torment, they will cry out in the deepest regret and confusion: "Oh, would that we had obeyed Allah and obeyed the Messenger!"
This is not a mere statement; it is a scream of the soul that finally sees the truth — but sees it too late. In the worldly life, they had the chance to listen, to follow, to submit. They were given clear signs, sent messengers, and revealed books. Yet they turned away, followed their desires, and mocked the call to truth. Now, with the Fire licking at their faces, they realize that every moment of disobedience was a step toward this very punishment, and every act of arrogance was a chain binding them to this torment.
The verse strikes at the heart of human nature: we often only appreciate the value of guidance after we have lost it. But on that Day, regret will not help. The doors of repentance will be sealed, and the only thing left will be the burning awareness of what could have been — had they but obeyed Allah and His Messenger in the life of this world.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, this verse is not meant to frighten you into despair — it is meant to awaken you while there is still time. Today, you are alive. Today, your heart beats, your tongue can move, and your limbs can act. Today, the door of repentance is wide open, and Allah’s mercy is closer to you than your own jugular vein.
Do not wait until you see the Fire with your own eyes to wish you had obeyed. Do not let the regrets of that Day become yours. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sent as a mercy to all of humanity, and the Qur’an was revealed as a light to guide you through the darkness of this world. Every prayer you pray, every sin you abandon, every step you take toward Allah — it is all an investment in your own salvation.
The people in the Fire will say, "Oh, would that we had obeyed Allah and obeyed the Messenger!" But you — you can say it now, not as a wish, but as a reality. Obey Allah in what He has commanded, and obey His Messenger ﷺ in what he has taught, and you will never have to utter those words of regret on a Day when no regret can save you.
Choose today. Choose guidance. Choose the path that leads to eternal bliss — for the alternative is a regret so deep that even the Fire itself cannot match its bitterness.
