- Tamatheel (تَمَاثِيلَ): Statues or images, which were permissible in Prophet Sulaiman's law.
- Jifan (جِفَانٍ): Huge bowls or basins.
- Al-Jawab (الْجَوَابِ): Great reservoirs or large water tanks (plural of *jabiyah*).
- Qudoor Rasiyat (قُدُورٍ رَّاسِيَاتٍ): Immovable cooking pots, fixed in place due to their enormous size.
Tafsir (Explanation):
The verse takes us into the magnificent workshop of Prophet Sulaiman (peace be upon him), where the jinn were subjugated by Allah's command to serve him. They crafted for him whatever he desired: towering places of worship and prayer chambers, statues and images (which were lawful in his era), enormous bowls as vast as water reservoirs, and massive cooking pots so huge that they could not be moved from their stations. These were not mere luxuries—they were tools for a kingdom that served justice, wisdom, and the worship of Allah.
Then comes the divine call: "Work, O family of David, in gratitude!" This was a direct address to the household of Prophet Dawud (peace be upon him)—including Sulaiman—commanding them to translate their blessings into action. Gratitude here is not just a word on the lips; it is obedience to Allah, using every gift—power, wealth, knowledge, and skill—in ways that please Him. The family of David understood this deeply: they turned their extraordinary blessings into extraordinary worship, serving humanity and establishing justice.
Yet, the verse ends with a profound and sobering truth: "And few of My servants are truly grateful." This is a gentle but piercing reminder for all of us. How many of us recognize the countless blessings around us—health, family, faith, provision—and respond with consistent, heartfelt gratitude? The grateful ones are rare, and they are the ones who understand that every blessing is a trust from Allah, to be used for His sake.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear reader, pause and look at your own life. You may not have jinn building palaces for you, but you have blessings beyond count—the air you breathe, the heart that beats, the mind that thinks, the faith that guides you. The family of David was asked to work in gratitude, and so are you. Gratitude is not merely saying "Alhamdulillah" with your tongue; it is living a life that reflects your thankfulness—praying, giving charity, being kind, seeking knowledge, and avoiding what Allah has forbidden.
The Qur'an tells us that Allah has promised to increase the one who is grateful: *"If you are grateful, I will surely give you more"* (Ibrahim 14:7). So why not be among the few? Why not be one of those rare servants whose hearts are always connected to their Lord, whose actions speak of thankfulness, and whose lives become a beacon of light for others?
Let this verse inspire you to transform your blessings into worship. Whatever skill, wealth, or influence you have—use it for good. Be like the family of David: mighty in power, yet humble in gratitude. And remember, the door of gratitude is open to everyone, and its reward is beyond imagination. Be among the few, and let your life be a testimony of thankfulness to the Most Merciful.
