Word Meanings:
- Minsa'ah (مِنسَأَتَهُ): His staff or stick upon which he leaned.
- Dābbat al-Ard (دَابَّةُ الْأَرْض): The creature of the earth — specifically, the woodworm or termite.
- Kharra (خَرَّ): He fell down (to the ground).
- Al-ʿAdhāb al-Muhīn (الْعَذَابِ الْمُهِينِ): The humiliating torment — referring to the hard, demeaning labor the jinn were subjected to.
Explanation of the Verse:
When Allah decreed death upon Prophet Sulayman (peace be upon him), he remained standing, leaning on his staff, and the jinn continued their exhausting work, unaware that he had passed away. Allah kept him in that state for a period of time, and nothing revealed his death to the jinn except the tiny creature of the earth — the woodworm — which slowly gnawed away at his staff. When the staff finally gave way, Sulayman's body fell to the ground, and only then did the jinn realize the truth.
At that moment, the jinn understood clearly that they do not possess knowledge of the unseen (al-ghayb). Had they truly known the unseen, they would have known of Sulayman's death long before and would not have remained in that humiliating torment — performing back-breaking labor under the false assumption that he was still alive and watching over them. This event was a decisive proof from Allah, exposing the false claim that the jinn have access to the unseen, a belief that some people had held.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
This remarkable scene carries a profound lesson for every human being. The mightiest of creatures — the jinn — were rendered helpless by the smallest of Allah's creations, a tiny worm. This shows that Allah's power is absolute and that no being, however strong or clever, can escape His decree. The One who controls the life and death of a prophet, and who uses a fragile worm to reveal His wisdom, is the only One worthy of worship and complete trust.
Moreover, this verse shatters every superstition and false belief about knowing the future. No one — whether human, jinn, or soothsayer — knows the unseen except Allah alone. So turn your heart to the One who holds all knowledge and all power. He is the Living who never dies, the Eternal who never changes, and the Wise who never errs. Place your reliance on Him, and you will find peace that no creature can ever provide. For the true believer, this story is a reminder that Allah's wisdom is beyond our comprehension, yet always perfect, and that His promise of reward for the patient and the faithful is the most certain truth of all.
