Key Words and Phrases:

  • فَزِعُوا (fazi'u): They were terrified, stricken with panic and extreme fear.
  • فَلَا فَوْتَ (fa lā fawt): There is no escape, no way to flee, no chance of evading.
  • مِن مَّكَانٍ قَرِيبٍ (min makānin qarīb): From a place nearby, meaning from where they stand, with no distance to cover.

Explanation of the Verse:

If you, O Messenger, could only witness the scene when these disbelievers are seized by sheer terror at the moment they behold the reality of the punishment and the resurrection — you would see something truly horrifying and beyond imagination. At that instant, all their arrogance and false confidence evaporate. They realize there is no escape, no refuge, and no power to save them. The angels seize them from the very spot they stand, dragging them to the Fire from a place so close that they cannot even take a single step to run away. It is a capture that is immediate, effortless, and absolute.

This verse strikes at the heart of human arrogance. Those who spent their lives denying the truth, mocking the messengers, and feeling secure in their worldly power will suddenly find themselves utterly helpless. The very ground they once walked on with pride becomes the place of their arrest. No distance, no time, no plan can save them. The Quran paints this scene to wake us up — to remind us that the Hereafter is not a distant myth but a certainty that will overtake us when we least expect it.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, this is not merely a warning for the disbelievers of the past. It is a mirror for every soul. If we live heedlessly, chasing this world while neglecting our duties to Allah, we too risk being caught in that moment of terror with no way out. But the beauty of Islam is that the door of repentance remains open until the final breath. Today, you can turn back to Allah, seek His forgiveness, and reform your life. You can be among those who will not panic on that Day, but instead will be greeted with peace and honor. Do not wait until the terror arrives when escape is impossible. Come back to your Lord now, while you still have the chance, and taste the sweetness of faith and the security of His mercy.

📜 Verse 49-53 — Saba

Say, "The truth has come, and falsehood can neither begin [anything] nor repeat [it]."
Say, "If I should err, I would only err against myself. But if I am guided, it is by what my Lord reveals to me. Indeed, He is Hearing and near."
And if you could see when they are terrified but there is no escape, and they will be seized from a place nearby.
And they will [then] say, "We believe in it!" But how for them will be the taking [of faith] from a place far away?
And they had already disbelieved in it before and would assault the unseen from a place far away.
