Explanation of the Verse:
In this noble verse, Allah commands His Messenger Muhammad (peace be upon him) to declare to the disbelievers who accused him of falsehood and deviation: "Say: If I have gone astray, then I only go astray to the detriment of my own soul." This means that if the Prophet were to deviate from the truth — which is absolutely impossible — the harm of that deviation would fall solely upon himself, not upon anyone else. He would bear the burden of his own error, and no one else would be harmed by it.
Then Allah instructs him to say: "And if I am guided, it is because of what my Lord reveals to me." This means that any guidance, righteousness, or truth that the Prophet possesses comes purely from Allah's revelation — the Qur'an and divine wisdom — bestowed upon him by His Lord. The Prophet has no credit for this guidance of his own doing; it is purely a favor and mercy from Allah. Thus, the Prophet disassociates himself from any claim of self-derived knowledge or merit, directing all praise and gratitude to Allah alone.
Finally, Allah says: "Indeed, He is All-Hearing and Near." He hears all the sayings of His servants — whether they are truthful or false, whether they are words of faith or denial — and nothing escapes His hearing. He is also Near to those who call upon Him, answering their supplications and knowing their innermost thoughts and intentions. His closeness is not limited by distance or time; He is always aware and ever responsive.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer. It teaches us the essence of humility and complete reliance on Allah. The Prophet (peace be upon him), despite being the best of creation, attributes all his guidance to Allah's revelation, never to his own intellect or effort. This is a beautiful model for us: whenever we do good, speak truth, or act righteously, we should recognize that it is Allah's mercy and guidance that enabled us — not our own merit. And whenever we err, we should blame ourselves and repent, not others.
Moreover, the verse reassures us of Allah's closeness. He is not far away in the heavens, detached from our struggles. He hears every word we utter, every prayer we raise, and every sigh of our hearts. He is near — so near that He responds to those who call upon Him sincerely. So turn to Him in all your affairs, seek His guidance in every step, and know that He is always listening, always near. This is the beauty of Islam: a direct, intimate connection between the servant and his Lord, with no intermediary and no barrier.
