Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Tanāwush (التنَاوُش): To reach out for something, to grasp or take hold of it, often with effort and from a distance.
- Min makānin baʿīd (مِن مَّكَانٍ بَعِيدٍ): From a far-off place, meaning a place or time that is no longer within reach.
Explanation of the Verse:
When the disbelievers witness the punishment of the Hereafter with their own eyes, and the reality of what they once denied becomes undeniable, they will cry out in desperation: "We now believe in it!" — meaning they declare faith in Allah, His Books, His Messengers, and the Day of Judgment. But how could this faith possibly benefit them at that moment? How can they reach out and grasp faith when the time for its acceptance has long passed?
This is a rhetorical question that highlights the utter futility of their claim. Faith is only accepted in the life of this world, which is the realm of action and choice. The Hereafter is the realm of recompense and justice, not a place for deeds or repentance. The opportunity for belief and turning back to Allah was in the worldly life, where they had free will, time, and countless signs. But now, they stand at the edge of the abyss, trying to seize something that is impossibly far from them — like a drowning man grasping at air.
The verse paints a vivid picture of regret and loss. They delayed their faith until the very moment it could no longer help them, and now they are left with nothing but sorrow and the bitter taste of missed opportunity.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, this verse is a profound reminder for every one of us. The door of repentance is open *now* — in this very moment — but it will not remain open forever. Do not be like those who wait until it is too late, only to realize that the chance has slipped away. Allah, in His infinite mercy, invites you today to turn to Him, to believe in His Messenger Muhammad (peace be upon him), and to live a life of righteousness. Seize this precious opportunity before the angel of death arrives, and before you find yourself crying out for a faith that can no longer be accepted. The distance between you and Allah’s mercy is not measured in time or space, but in the sincerity of your heart and the swiftness of your return to Him. Do not delay, for tomorrow may never come.
