Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Ghayb (غَيْب): That which is hidden from human perception and knowledge — the unseen, the concealed realities of existence.
- Dhāt al-Ṣudūr (ذَاتِ الصُّدُورِ): Literally "that which is in the breasts" — the innermost secrets, intentions, thoughts, and feelings that reside within the hearts of people.
Explanation of the Verse:
Allah, the Exalted, declares His absolute and perfect knowledge of the unseen — everything that is hidden in the heavens and the earth. Not a single secret, not a single hidden reality, escapes His awareness. The vastness of the universe, with all its mysteries and concealed wonders, lies fully open before His knowledge. He knows what no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what has never crossed the mind of any human being.
Then Allah emphasizes an even more profound truth: He is fully aware of what lies within the hearts and breasts of His servants. He knows every intention, every desire, every fleeting thought, every whisper of the soul — whether good or evil, whether spoken or kept hidden deep within. He knows the secrets that a person has never revealed to anyone, the thoughts they have never uttered, and the feelings they have never expressed. If He knows what is hidden in the hearts, then how much more does He know of what is said openly and done visibly?
This verse carries a powerful message of accountability and mindfulness. Since Allah knows the innermost secrets of every heart, believers must be ever conscious that their intentions, thoughts, and hidden motives are all within His sight. No one can hide anything from Him — not in the heavens, not on the earth, and not within the depths of their own soul. This knowledge should inspire sincere devotion, pure intentions, and constant self-purification, for the One who sees the hidden is certainly aware of the apparent. Let this awareness fill your heart with awe and love — awe of His all-encompassing knowledge, and love for a Lord who knows your struggles, your silent prayers, and the goodness you strive to keep hidden. He sees your sincere efforts even when no one else does, and He will reward you for what your heart truly contains.
