Tafsir (Explanation):
Imagine for a moment that Allah, in His perfect justice, were to punish people immediately for every sin they commit—every wrong word, every hidden intention, every act of disobedience. If that were the case, not a single living creature would remain on the face of the earth. The destruction would be total and absolute, for humanity's transgressions are countless and overwhelming.
But our Lord, in His infinite mercy and wisdom, does not rush to punish. He withholds His immediate retribution and grants people a respite until an appointed time—a term that He alone has determined. This delay is not a sign of neglect or weakness; rather, it is an open door for repentance, a window of opportunity for the sinner to turn back, and a test of patience for the believer.
When that appointed time finally arrives—whether at the moment of death or on the Day of Resurrection—Allah will deal with His servants with perfect knowledge. Nothing escapes His sight: every deed, every intention, every hidden thought is recorded and known. He will reward the righteous with goodness and hold the wrongdoers accountable with justice.
This verse carries a profound message of hope and warning. It reassures the believers that Allah's mercy prevails, and it cautions the sinners that the respite is temporary. The delay is not forgiveness; it is an invitation to mend one's ways before the appointed hour strikes.
A Da'wah Reflection:
How beautiful is this verse in teaching us about Allah's attribute of patience and mercy! If Allah were quick to punish, none of us would survive. Yet He gives us breath after breath, day after day, year after year—not because He is unaware, but because He loves for us to return to Him. Every sunrise you witness is a new chance to repent, every heartbeat is a mercy renewed.
Do not mistake Allah's forbearance for indifference. He sees everything, and His promise is true. Let this verse inspire you to seize the moment, to turn to your Creator before the appointed term arrives, and to live a life that pleases Him. For on that Day, His sight will leave nothing unaccounted, and His justice will be perfect—just as His mercy is vast.
