Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse poses a profound rhetorical question: Is the one whose evil deeds have been made to appear beautiful to him—so much so that he sees his wickedness as virtue—equal to the one whom Allah has guided to see truth as truth and falsehood as falsehood? The answer is an emphatic no. These two people are not alike, just as light and darkness are not alike.
The first person has been deceived by Satan, who beautifies sin and wraps it in attractive garments. The sinner then embraces his wrongdoing with satisfaction, believing he is on the right path. He may even feel proud of his disobedience, thinking it is a form of wisdom or freedom. This is one of the greatest punishments—when a person’s heart becomes so corrupted that evil looks good to him, and good looks evil.
The verse then reminds us that Allah, in His perfect wisdom and justice, leads astray whom He wills and guides whom He wills. This is not arbitrary or unjust, but rather a consequence of His divine knowledge of what is in people’s hearts. Those who sincerely seek the truth are guided to it, while those who turn away from it are left to their own devices as a form of divine justice.
Then comes a tender address to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and to every believer: "Do not let your soul be consumed with grief over them." The Prophet’s heart was heavy with sorrow because his people rejected the message of truth. He wished so deeply for their salvation that it pained him. Allah consoles him, saying: Do not destroy yourself with regret. Your duty is to convey the message clearly, not to force hearts to believe. Guidance is in Allah’s hands alone.
Finally, the verse closes with a powerful reassurance: "Indeed, Allah is All-Knowing of what they do." Nothing escapes His knowledge—not their secret plots, not their open hostility, not their hidden intentions. He knows exactly what they are doing, and He will call them to account with perfect justice. No deed, however small or hidden, is lost with Him.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, pause and examine your own heart. Are there actions you have grown comfortable with that may displease Allah? Satan is a master of deception—he can make a lie look like truth, a sin look like virtue, and a harmful habit look like a harmless pleasure. The believer’s protection lies in constant self-accountability, sincere repentance, and seeking Allah’s guidance through the Qur’an and the Sunnah.
This verse also brings comfort to those who carry the weight of calling others to Islam. If you have tried to guide someone and they still refuse, do not let grief overwhelm you. Your sincerity is witnessed by Allah, and your reward is secure with Him. Hearts are in His hands—He turns them as He wills. So do your part with patience and wisdom, and leave the rest to the One who knows all things.
And what a beautiful promise this is: that Allah knows everything you do—your struggles, your sacrifices, your quiet efforts in His cause. Nothing is wasted. He is the All-Knowing, the All-Seeing, and His justice is perfect. So strive in goodness, trust in His wisdom, and never let sorrow for the misguided steal your peace.
