- Ḍalāl mubīn (ضَلَالٍ مُّبِينٍ): Clear, manifest error and misguidance.
Explanation of the Verse:
When the disbelievers of Makkah were advised by the believers to spend from the wealth that Allah had bestowed upon them — to help the poor, the needy, and the destitute — they responded with arrogance and mockery. They said to the believers: "Shall we feed those whom Allah, if He willed, would have fed Himself?" They used this twisted logic as an excuse to withhold charity, claiming that if Allah wanted those people to be fed, He would have provided for them directly. They pretended to submit to Allah's will, while in reality they were using this argument as a shield for their stinginess and hard-heartedness.
Then they added, addressing the believers: "You are nothing but in clear error!" — meaning, "You are misguided for asking us to spend our wealth on others." They considered the call to charity and compassion as a deviation from the truth, and they mocked the believers who encouraged good deeds.
This was not a sincere belief on their part, but rather a form of ridicule and stubbornness. They heard the believers attributing all matters to Allah's will, so they twisted this concept to justify their refusal to help others. Their statement was a mockery, not a conviction, as evidenced by their insulting words to the believers.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, ponder how the disbelievers used a false pretext to escape a simple act of kindness. They claimed to respect Allah's will, yet Allah had commanded them to spend and had made charity a means of purifying their wealth and souls. They ignored that Allah tests people through one another — the rich through the poor, and the poor through patience. When you give charity, you are not contradicting Allah's will; rather, you are fulfilling it. Allah provides for everyone, but He has made the wealthy a means of support for the needy, and He rewards those who give generously.
This verse teaches us the beauty of Islam: it calls us to open our hearts and hands for others, to see the needs around us, and to respond with compassion. Do not let weak excuses prevent you from earning immense rewards. Every dirham you spend for Allah's sake is a seed planted for your Hereafter, and Allah never lets a good deed go to waste. Be among those who hear the call to spend and respond with joy, for they are the ones who truly understand the purpose of wealth — to be a bridge of mercy between hearts, not a barrier of greed.
