Word Meanings:

  • Āyah (آية): A sign, miracle, proof, or evidence that points to the truth of Allah’s Oneness and the sincerity of His Messengers.
  • Muʿriḍīn (مُعْرِضِين): Those who turn away deliberately, ignoring and avoiding something despite its clarity.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse describes the stubborn attitude of the disbelievers of Makkah. Whenever a clear sign from their Lord came to them—whether it was a miracle, a revelation, or a proof demonstrating the truth of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and calling them to the worship of Allah alone—they met it with nothing but rejection and avoidance. They did not pause to reflect, nor did they benefit from these signs. Instead, they habitually turned away, having accustomed themselves to arrogance and heedlessness. Their hearts had become so hardened that even the most evident truths could not penetrate them. They saw the signs, but they chose to ignore them, as if they had never seen them at all.

This is a profound lesson for every believer: the value of a sign lies not in its appearance, but in the heart that receives it. The same sun rises over the believer and the disbeliever, the same Qur’an is recited to both, yet one is guided and the other remains lost—because guidance is a matter of the heart’s openness and sincerity.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, do not let your heart become like theirs. Every day, Allah sends you signs—in the beauty of nature, in the verses of the Qur’an, in the events of your life, and in the call of truth that reaches your ears. Do not be among those who see but do not observe, who hear but do not listen. Open your heart to these signs, for they are messages of love and mercy from your Lord, inviting you to a life of peace and purpose. Turn to Allah with humility, and you will find that every sign becomes a light guiding you to His pleasure. Embrace the truth while it is within your reach, for the heart that turns away today may find the door closed tomorrow. Let this verse be a wake-up call: be among those who respond, not among those who turn away.

📜 Verse 44-48 — Yasin

Except as a mercy from Us and provision for a time.
But when it is said to them, "Beware of what is before you and what is behind you; perhaps you will receive mercy... "
And no sign comes to them from the signs of their Lord except that they are from it turning away.
And when it is said to them, "Spend from that which Allah has provided for you," those who disbelieve say to those who believe, "Should we feed one whom, if Allah had willed, He would have fed? You are not but in clear error."
And they say, "When is this promise, if you should be truthful?"
