Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- الشِّعْر (Ash-Shi'r): Poetry — metrical, rhymed speech that is composed with artistic intent and often carries imaginative or exaggerated expressions.
- وَمَا يَنبَغِي لَهُ (Wa mā yanbaghī lah): It is not fitting or becoming for him; it does not suit his nature or character.
- ذِكْر (Dhikr): A reminder, admonition, or message that awakens the heart and calls to reflection.
- قُرْآنٌ مُّبِين (Qur'ānun mubīn): A clear, manifest recitation — a book whose verses are distinct, evident in their truth, and unambiguous in their guidance.
Tafsir (Explanation):
Allah, the Exalted, declares the noble status of His final Messenger, Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), by clearing him of any association with poetry. Allah says: *"And We did not teach him poetry, nor is it fitting for him."* This is a definitive negation — the Prophet was never taught poetry by Allah, nor did he ever compose or recite it. It was not in his nature, his disposition, or his character to engage in it. Before his prophethood, he was known among his people as "Al-Amin" (the trustworthy) and "As-Sadiq" (the truthful), and he never uttered a single line of poetry. This was a deliberate divine arrangement, so that no one could accuse him of being a poet or claim that the Qur'an was merely poetic inspiration or imaginative fabrication.
The verse continues: *"It is nothing but a Reminder and a clear Qur'an."* What he brought is not poetry, nor magic, nor soothsaying — it is a profound reminder that awakens the hearts of those who possess intellect and insight, and a clear, luminous Book whose verses distinguish truth from falsehood, whose rulings are evident, and whose wisdom is manifest. It guides the living-hearted to the straight path, and it establishes the conclusive proof of Allah against those who persist in disbelief.
This verse carries a beautiful reassurance for every believer: the Qur'an is not the product of human creativity or artistic flair — it is the direct, unaltered word of Allah, preserved and protected. Its clarity is its miracle; its guidance is its mercy. When you recite it, you are not listening to the words of a man, but to the speech of the Creator of the heavens and the earth. Let this fill your heart with awe and gratitude, for you hold in your hands a treasure that no poet, no philosopher, and no genius could ever produce. And let it also be a call to you: open your heart to this Reminder, reflect on its verses, and let it transform your life — for it is the light that leads to eternal success in this world and the Hereafter.
