Word Meanings:

  • "Barakna" (We blessed): We sent down abundant and continuous blessings, including prophethood, wealth, and numerous offspring.
  • "Muhsin" (one who does good): A person who is obedient to Allah and righteous in their deeds.
  • "Zalimun li-nafsihi" (wrongdoer to himself): One who harms himself through disbelief, sin, and disobedience.
  • "Mubin" (clear/evident): Obvious and unmistakable in its nature.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this noble verse, Allah the Exalted tells us about His special favor upon Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) and his son Prophet Ishaq (Isaac), peace be upon them both. Allah says that He placed His blessing upon them — a blessing that encompassed their lives, their families, and their descendants. This blessing included the gift of prophethood continuing through their lineage, abundant progeny, and great honor in this world and the Hereafter.

However, Allah then reveals a profound truth about human nature and free will: from the descendants of these two noble prophets, there would come both types of people. Some would be "Muhsin" — those who do good, who are obedient to their Lord, who follow the path of righteousness, and who benefit themselves through their faith and virtuous actions. These are the believers who carry forward the legacy of their prophetic forefathers.

And among their descendants would also be those who are "Zalimun li-nafsihi mubin" — wrongdoers to themselves with clear and evident injustice. These are people who, despite having the noble lineage of prophets, choose the path of disbelief, polytheism, and sin. They wrong themselves because their disobedience brings harm upon their own souls, leading them away from Allah's mercy and toward His displeasure.

This verse teaches us a crucial lesson: noble lineage alone does not guarantee salvation. What matters is one's own faith, actions, and relationship with Allah. Even the descendants of the greatest prophets can go astray if they choose to, and likewise, anyone — regardless of their background — can attain righteousness through sincere faith and good deeds.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, ponder deeply upon this verse. Allah blessed Ibrahim and Ishaq with tremendous favors, yet among their very own descendants were those who chose disbelief and sin. This shows us that every soul is responsible for its own choices. You do not need to come from a "religious family" to be righteous, nor does coming from a religious family guarantee your salvation.

Today, Allah is calling you to be among the "Muhsinun" — those who do good. The door of repentance is always open. If you find yourself among the wrongdoers, know that Allah's mercy is vast, and He accepts the repentance of those who turn back to Him sincerely. Do not let your past define your future. Strive to be among those who bring benefit to themselves and others through faith, prayer, charity, and good character.

The legacy of Ibrahim and Ishaq is not merely a historical story — it is a living invitation for you to choose your path. Will you be among the doers of good, or among those who wrong themselves? The choice is yours, and the time to decide is now. May Allah guide us all to be among His righteous servants.
